Before he could escape he was struck in the fore head by a brick, knocked senseless and badly injured. Revolvers were drawn and ind incriminate shooting began, dur ing wtiich Officer John Strong was shol iu the hand. A large number of rioters were also injured. The police charged the crowd aud made seven arrest, capturiug the man who threw tho brick at Granger. At this hour the en tire southwestern district of the city is wild with excitement and alarm. Nooalfs, Ariz., May4.-Lieutenat.lt Clark, of Captain Lebo's troop K, Tenth cavalry, reached here at daylight thiii morning with dispatches from the front, Lebo had a hot engagement with tht hostiles yesterday afternoon in the Pin yoe mountains, losing one man and ont wounded. Three Apaches were killed, Being unable to dislodge the hostileti from their stronghold Lebo withdrew his troops. Troop L, Tenth, and troop U, Fourth cavalry, left here at 1 o'clock this morning for Pmyoe to aid Lebo in his second attack which it is proposed to make on the Apaches. Breaking Fron Jail. Win field, Kan., May 4. The pris oners confined in the Cowley county jail made a desperate attempt to escape last night. Deputy Sheriff Herrod had opened the jail door to lock the prison ers in their cells, when they made a dash at him, armed with stove legs and lumps of coal. A blow on the bead koooked Herrod down. One of the guards tired at the crowd and instantly killed W. P. Bennett, in iiul for coun terfeiting. The guard received sev eral blows on the head, which rendered him insensible, and four prisoners suc ceeded in making their escape. Irons Opinian. St. Louis, May 4. A committee from the Brewerj union today called upon various brewers of the city and demanded the adoption of the eight hour system. The brewers requested that no decisive action he taken by the members of the union un til after a meeting of the Brewers asso ciation, which will be held Wednesday, when thet promise to consider the de mands, and formulate their reply as soon aiterwatdsas possible. The Brew ers of this city shouH be well satisfied with their wages as tbey are paid uve per cent, more pay per month than those in Milwaukee, and an amicable adjust ment will probably be ai rived at soon. More Trouble at the McCormlck Works. Chicago, May 4. The McCormick reaper works opened as usual this morn- ng, fully one-half the workmen re turning despite the intimidation and bloodshed of yesterday afternoon. A special force of police on duty to pro tect the men on tboir way to work, Several crowds were early reported as gatheringin the lumberdistricts. From wbence the mob ot yesterday proceeded. Strong detail on duty at the central sta tion same as yesterday, and the entire force held in reserve for any sudden call. An attempt was made to bold a mass meeting on the prairie where the incendiary speeches of yesterday were made, but the police dispersed the crowd. The switchmen are still at work, and the railroads are doing busi ness as usual. All Going to Work. St. Louis, May 4. Detroit, May 3, A special to the Evening Journal from Tekosha. Mich., says that a horrible crime was com' mitted a ha!' mile east of there this morning. R. Shedd, a wealthy pioneer. of this section, killed his wife at 7 o, clock this morning by beheading her with an axe while she was dressing. He then evidently went to the k'tohen and cut his own throat. When discovered, Mrs. Shcdd was lying in one oorner of her bedroom, with only part of her clothing on. Mr. Shedd was lying in the kitchen near tne stove in a pool of blood. Shedd was 33 years of age and ono of the earliest settlers in this section. The cause ot the tragedy is said to have been domestic trouble. Remit of the Law's Delaya. Nebraska City, Neb.. May 3. A well organi.od gang of Vigilantes met at a farm bouse south of this city and re solved to force the jail and lynch Shel Innbargor between 2 and 4 o'clock to morrow morning. One tt the party gave the game away to the sheriff who biirredely had the prisoners taken to thes'.ate penitentiary. Tbe evidence goes to shnw that Sbellenberger was implicated in tbo murder of Thomas Leonard who was killed May 18, 1884. Leonard's watch is said to have been (round in Sbellenbergui's bouse. Shel leuberger is also suspictoued cf several other murders. . ftitrs-Glyesriae Explosion Pínole, Cala., May 9 Tha nitro glycerine bouse of the California pow der works, loeated a short distance frdm here, was blown to atoms this afternoon by the explosion of 1,300 pounds of nttrO-giyceriue wuiuu 11, cuuiaiusu. Three Chinese, and Andrew Anderson fnhitel were killed. The accident is believed to have been caused by one ot th Chinamen while engaged 10 an al tercation with one of bis countrymen, dropping a bucket lull 01 nitro-glycerine, wbich exploded from conouaston. RIOTOUS STRIKERS la Chicago Have Fatal Encounters With the Police. Chicago, May 8. Shortly after 3 o'clock, a crowd of socialists and others who bad worked themselves Into a frenzy of excitement, started yelling towards the McCormick reaper works, half a mile distant. Tbe police were immediately telephoned for and soon arrived, and drawing revolvers tired in discriminately into the crowd which scattered in all directions. Five of the rioters were wounded, and carried from the scene; no one is reported killed. The entire reserve force of the city po lice has been called out to preserve or der in tbe vicinity of the troubles. The scene at the McCormick works was riotous in tbe extreme. By 4:20 at least 150 policemen had arrived on the ground and were still coming in patrol wagons. By. this time the windows of the factory had been riddled with stones and bullets. Two of tbe patrol wagons while on the way to the scene stoppod to dis perse a noisy and demonstrative crowd at the oorner of Blue Island avenue and Lincoln street. The mob attacked them with stones, but the officers jumped from the wagon and by a vigorous use ot their clubs soon sent tbe rioters fly ing in all directions. Tbey then turned and began driving noisy crowds out of the numerous saloons in that neighbor hood, using their clubs indiscrimi nately. A rioter who bad got inside came up behind him ana was pointing a pistol at bis bead, not two feet away, when Lieutenant Shephard STRUCK HIM TO THE EARTH with his club, shivering it to pieces wiib tbe vigor of the blow. No Trouble Anticipated si Denver. Denver, May 3. Laboring men took no action in tbe eight hour move ment today. All men employed at round bouses, foundries, smelters, planing mills, as well as carpenters and masons went to work this morning and worked ten hours as usual. Node mand has been made for reduction of hours except in a few cases, aud no strike or lookout is anticipated. Mill men do not favor tbe movement and will refuse to accede to a demand pro viding a combined one is made.
