To the queen's request to Mr
Gladstone not to force a dissolution
of parliament, by reason of the serious
effect it might have on the commer
cial affairs of tbe nation, the premier
replied that he intended to win or the
concern would hare to emit. Men
like Gladstone sit usually on top of
the perch and handle affairs after
their own fashion from their altitudi
nous point of view.
The after effects of the strikes are
now seen in Bradstreet's business re
view for the past week. The building
. contracts canceled on account of them
amount to the huge total of $20.400.
000. Probably more than sixty per
cent, of this amount would have gone
to the laborer. The dollar and cents
problem in all these matters between
capital and labor, can never be pushed
aside by the laborer, but must be
solved by him, and while the solu
tion is going forward at the loss of
time and bread, capital can fold its
hands and serenely wait.
Therbi is a sentiment abroad in
the land, covering tbe country from
one end to the other, that there is
need of congressional action relative
to our coast and lake defenses. The
one vital point of weakness in our
national defenses is tbe condition of
utter helplessness our maratime
ports are all in, in the event any out
side nation should care to attack us.
The appropriations for river and har
bor improvements each year are
never niggardly in amount, and it
will be a work of patriotism for con
gress to take hold of the matter of
providing adequate defenses for our
sea coast-JRillion jropoAjr would
be destroyed if an enemv were to
make a descent on our coasts in their
present unprotected state.
Thb splendid showing now being
made by the mines at Kingston,
where the fact of rich ore beine
placed on the dumps is the evidence
of the wonderful mineral wealth of
that district, will be of greater bene
fit to our territory than can easily be
imagined by a cursory review of
tne great natural resources surround
ing us here on every hand. The
grand impetus given to the material
growth of th ePacinoooast during the
days when . the Comstock lode of
Nevada was pouring into the laps of
men the wealth of kingdoms, is more
than likely to be felt throughout
New Mexico and the southwest by
the output of this sterling young
giant, the mining camp of Kingston.

precious ores there take from the
minds of men all idle day dreams and
in place thereof fill them with won
der and the realization that 'tis only
necessary to stretch forth one's hands,
and wealth that which men Drize.
struggle for, slave for and die for, is
beneath their feet. There are other
Kingatons yet to be discovered in our
mountain ranges, and the predictions
of scientists will no longer be consid
ered a chimera in the declaration
that the wealth beneath the surface
of the ground here will treblell the
holdings in every other industry and
enterprise in operation in New
Mexico.

Captain L. Barns, of Alma, N. M-,
who recently discovered a very rich
gold lead on Silver Creek in the Mogol
lón mountains has already succeeded in
placing bis property in St. Louis upon
such advantageous terms that the open
ing of the mine will be hurried foreward
with the greatest rapidity.
Respecting the famous Sheridan
mine In the ssme camp, now owned by
St. Louis people, the Republican has
