Thk territorial treasurer, the Hon,
Ortiz y Salazar, has enjoyed the usu
fruct ot office for ever a decade of
years. There is a positive impression
skirting the mind of the taxpayers
that a bit of reform and honest man
agement in the person of a staunch
democrat filling the office will have a
most healthful influence toward in
spiring confidence that the financial
affairs of New Mexico are bandied for
the interests of alt the peop!e.
The eloquent gentlemen who will
address the people of Las Vegas to
morrow in memory of the dead heroes
whose narrow homes will be decor
ated the land over with the emblems
that tell of a nation's love, will fit
tingly and appropriately speak the
sentiments of heroic resolve and de
votion to duty and their country's
welfare that actuated the defenders ot
those principles, which have in their
operation given America the grandest
government that a happy united peo
ple ever enjoyed.

ico will appreciate prompt action on
the part of Governor Ross in paying
his respects to the auditorship of the
territory. The present incumbent
has waxed - fat in the disinterested
manner he has performed the duties
of the office. Tm Gazette, in com
mon with a majority of the people,
has the opinion that when the opera
tions of the auditor's office are turned
toward the broad light of day, some
very musty facts of republican mis
management will greet the nostrils of
the people, and be so pungent with
odor as to cause the question to be
asked why the airing was not made
sooner.

longer tied, but, on the contrary,
with the hearty support of the psrty
to upheld them in aiding him in his
duties, should no longer let any sen
timents of delicacy or regard for the
opinions of the opposition deter him
from making the changes required by
the party in the territorial offices.
The rank and file expect this, and
any unnecessary delay will be a dis
appointment, to say the least. Men
in accord with the administration are
those that will give character and dig
nity to public affairs in office. The
auditorship should be given to a
member of the party. ; The man who
will fill the office and make a most
acceptable official, who has those ele
ments of character and persopal worth
as well as high qualifications for the
discharge of the duties of the office, is
the , Hon. Rafael Romero, of La
Cueva, Mora county. Governor Ross
will satisfy the wishes of the party
by placing the office of territorial
auditor at the disposition of Mr.
Romero.
