INTERESTING EXPERIMENTS
A British physician has been
conducting a series of experi
ments for the Medical Research
Committee of the British National
Insurance Commission on the ef
fect of alcohol in moderate doses
on manual work "and ncuro-mus-cular
coordination.
These experiments covered a
period of several wetks. ' Type
writing, use 'of the adding t ma
chine and pricking a target set up
vertically at arm's lehgth were
selected for use in experimenta
tion. Alcohol with food,' alcohol
without food,alcohol On 'an "empty
stomach and, in both pure and
diluted dosc, were each fully
tested out.
After ascertaining that speed
was lessened by alcohol, the speed
element was ignored and atten
tion was concentrated on the one
element of accuracyas affected
by the moderate use of alcohol,
with the result that the eight men
and five women used as subjects
showed diminished control of the
muscles as proven by the increase
in the number of typing and add
ing machine mistakes, "by dimin
ished speed and by decreased con
trol in pricking the .target.' "In a
limited number of cases a smalF
quantity of alcohol taken witFr
food produced no reaction, the
dose being limited to a single
glass of port. Taken on an empt
stomach it was found twice as
toxic as when taken with food.
,Nov this test was in the interest
of scientific knowledge and not to
boost prohibition, and the con
clusion of the eminent physician
is not that uses of alcoholic bev
erages should become teetotalers.
Not at all. His deduction is tliaf
if engaged in industrial life Avhere
accuracy is v'alud they had best
do their moderate drinking after
the dose of the day's work. It
docs, however, tend to refute the
myth that artificial stimulation :
some way ushers in the superman.
It may be nearer the truth to say
that-when a man begins to regard
himself as the superman as a re
sidí of artificial stimulation he is
already on the mental toboggan-,
he himself, of course, being the
last to discover it.
