The lour room brick building and the two portable build ins, and thu fourth building rant ed bv the school board for the ac commodation of the school this year, are known to thr twitroti of thu school to be inudiuiite: they further know that if the present en rollment of a little lews than five hundred children, were to all ut-j tend school at the sRtns time, tht seating capacity would not accom modate them. I Uu; enrollment and senium capan-, II it uoes out that Tucumcari, ' 01 tnu room!i '" "ousts to whii h at this time has a reputation ' as follows ol living one of tht most pioitrus- BONDS FOR SCHOOL PURPOSES School district number one, em bracing a territory of about four by nine, miles, has, through its board of school directors, called an elec tion for the purpose of votinu lor or against bonds foi the erection of additional school houses in the district. The amount of bonds called for in this election is $24, 000. The objects and purposes of these bonds seem to be misunder stood by some of the citizenship of this citv and school district. For instance, the editor of the News has heard it aliened that the amount of these bonds, in case they are voted, will be assessed against the city government instead of against the school district, which is not so: it is the school district that is to vote for or against the bonds, and the district to be bonded in case the election is carried. Of course the school district, as before stated, does not only include the city ol Tucumcari, but an area of country embracing about four by nine miles of territory. Another argument we have heard is, that should we vote the $24,000 of bonds for school purposes, that the city would be precluded from voting bonds for its own public improvements' this like wise is a misconception, the fact being that thc issuance of school , bonds bv this school district has nothing whatever to do with the city government, or with its voting borids to whatever amount that can tie voted legally. It should be un derstood, once and forever, that the city government of Tucumcari iftnd school district number one are separate and apart, two different things, and that bonds voted for (school purposes in ttie uistrici wi fin ao way interfere with the city in whatever public improvements it nay be necessary to make in the uturc. . Xhf onJ' re'at'on ,n tne matter of school bonds that the one has to the other is, that both the city and school district must have addition al school facilities in order to meet the demands even of the present, not to consider the urgent demands that we all know are coming in the immediate future. By way ol illustration, the school district is at present bonded tor 911,000; 8,000 of which has been expend ed in the erection of the present four room brick school building on tollege street, McGee addition, and $i, 000 on the two portable "buildings on the same school grounds. In defense Of rtlr scftUOl bonrdq the Newi would like to call the at tention of our citizenship to the lact that wlienlphildren are placed in school, the tiourd ol education takes their guardianship lor the time being, and it is the hoard's lirst duty to se that thuir ixirt of the work is tittud to the 1msI ad vantage of the pupils. For in stance, properly lighted, ventilat ed and heated rooms are necessary, and none of this is available in Tucumcari. It is necessary thnt the board should nut only look af ter the fixtures, furniture, heating, ventilation, etc., but that the desks should be the proper size to tit the grades, allowing the feet of the child to rest squarely upon the floor, and of such height as to give an upright position, and the should be placed so that the light should come from either the back or side of the room. There a"; a thou sand details that a school board, on oath, must look after tor the welfare ol the children attending our public schools, that if neglect ed, the results in the future if thu community, and tin health and wel fare of the generation growim? up is dependent. So, when all of those things are considered it does seem mere matter ol percent sive towns tr the terrilr ut New Mexico, lias refused Ut vote bonds lor school purimses, it is going to Ih- a knock that we will not recover from for a long time in the future. We further find thnt the volume of air in the rooms is so insufhrient that it is injurious to the health of the pupils.
