ADAGES FROM EAST ATTROBA
Elbert Hubbard in Philadelphia North
American
When you make your will put noth
ing into it but tenderness kindness and
consideration I is to be read after
consIderton
your funeral and is a message from
the dead All the hate in our com
position should be interred with our
bones let love alone live Bronze
compliments bossed deep on memorial
tablets never yet thrilled human
hearts like a loving word in a will
Not only does beauty fade but I
leaves a record upon the countenance
as to what became h of I
Everlasting life will be yours 1 you
belief or disbelief
deserve it your present belef
belief does not affect the issue But
make sure of this if you are to be a
great soul in heaven you have got to
begin to be agreat soul here
The reason opinions are so diverse
concerning every strong man is that
most people fix their attention upon
some particular phase of his character
some external eccentricity possibly
that is of no value one way or the
other The whole is what makes up
the character not these trivial parts
The man who in his will provides a
penalty in case his wife marries again
never had any confidence in her during
life He thought he owned her body
and soul I is bad enough for a wo
man to be owned by enoug man but
to be dictated to by a dead one ugh
The greatest mistake you can make
in life is to be continually fearing you
will make one
To have many friends and then
when calumny lowers or calamity
threatens to have these friends sud
denly desert youwhat happier fate
The more one knows the more one
simplifies
The most serious foreign complica
tion this country has to fear under the
new order of things is a case of artis
the of Wllhelm II
tic jealousy on part Vlhelm I
Everything is waiting and watching
you to see what signal you hoist from
within You attract that which you
desire to attract
Poor people usually mind other peo
ples business and therefore have no
business of their own
I A War AntiTammany Toast
c New York Press 3
>
Many of the successful candidates on
the fusion and Republican tickets were
the guests at a dinner given by the
West Side Republican club 2307 Broad
way I was a jubilee affair and the
speeches were all in reference to the
victory One of the principal speakers
was John S Wise of Virginia Mr
Wise evoked much cheering and laugh
ter by offering this toast to Tammany
To Tammany hall and Dick Croker
its pilot May they be put ttusea in an
open boat without a rudder or com
pass May that boat be swallowed by
a shark and that shark by a whale in
the devils belly in the southwest cor
ner of hades with the door locked and
the key lost and a northwest wind
blowing the ashes in his eyes for ever

I A GIFTED HANIAC
Kraus the Sculptor Abandons His
Masterpiece For Madhouse
Philadelphia North American
Struggling to complete the master
work of his life Sculptor Adolph Rob
ert Kraus was driven mad by the cares
02 poverty He is now an inmate of
the state asylum in Danvers
Fate played a strange game with this
man of genius
She smiled on him at tirst and his
soul expanding under the kindly
warmth produced works of the high
est art Many of his fairest dreams
took hhape and bodied forth in the
solid marble became an inspiration to
his fellows and a lasting ornament to
the city of his adoption
Until the very day when the curtain
fell upon the tragedy there had opened
before him like a celestial vision tim
hfpo of a complete realization of his
ambition place among the immortals
in the House Beautiful of Art
On the other hand loomed the men
acing specters of poverty despair
starvation and death Aid standing
thus at the parting of thC ways he
saw the cup of success dashed from
his very lips I was then he became
a madman
In a city whose public park toasts
his work in bronze whose state house
has placed one of his marble creations
creatons
In a niche to commemorate a great
man he had walked the streets for
morthg getting poorer and more dis
couraged He ttas unable to secure
the little money needed to finish the
work that had been for years his fond
est dream the work that he believed
would have maJe him immortala gi
gantic figure of Belshazzar Seeing the
Writing on the Wall
hraus was oorn in xiouienroaa tier
many in 1850 At the age of 1 he be
gan work as a stone and wood carver
He improved rapidly opened a studio
and at the age of 23 had enough money
to go to Rome where he studied with
Emilio Wolf After one year in Romp
he took the first prize in the Royal In
i stitute of Fine Arts established a short
time before by the Italian government
Because of the merit of his work The
Puritan shown at that time he was
awarded a small pension by the Prus
sian government by order of Emperor
William
In 187C he went to Germany and
opened a school of architecture but
this did not succeed and he removed
to London There in 1880 he married
Miss Annie Culllnmore and in the fol
lowing year came to America settling
in Philadelphia Later he lived in New
York and some years ago came to Bos
ton
Among the notable sculptures hp has
made since coming to thir country Is
the Crispus Attucks monument on Bos
ton Common erected to the memory of
the first manthat died in the struggle
for American liberty Attucks was a
negro and was shot in front of the state
house in this city in what is known as
the Boston Massacre
In the state house on Beacon Hill is
a marble bust of Governor Oliver
Ames which Mr Kraus made by direc
tion of the state In the Mechanics
building is a bust of Paul Revere pro
nounced one of the finest sculptures
in the country Another bust that has
not been sean by the public is that of
exMayor Lincoln also a notable work
In Forest Hills cemetery are several
of his best conceptions among them
being the Jacob Wirth monument He
has made a head of Christ that is a
marvel of beauty and strength
