m i i h m ? f" ' STARTING AN ORCHARD IN THE RIGHT WAY Pruning nnd Cultlvntlnjr Are Necessary to Secure the Dest f Results-By Prof. V. II. Davis, Ohio 1 Agricultural College. Tho- first few yenrs of the llfo of nn orchard is tho moat critical period of its existence, bccaoHO neglect is moTo likely to occur and the injuries done at this timo can, fn many cases, nover bo ovorcomo by subsequent sood caro. In my orchard of some 8,000 npplo 'trees are n few hundred each of p'cnr, plum, cherry nnd peach, a plan somewhat as follows was pursued in selecting apple, pear, cherry nnd plum stock: I took trees not moro than two years old fiom bud or graft. In my Judg ment, trees of this ago will stnnd transplanting better than older ones, nnd in thp end will mako better trees. Peach trees are largo enough at one year and should never bo oldor, Trees were ordered in tho fall for spring shipment, nt which season, in my case, they were set out, I bought from tho lnrgo nursories that grow their own stock nnd deliver direct from their own grounds. Tho emnll nursery In tho locality of tho orchard is usually preferable for small quantities of plants, but is not nvailablo for large orders. I never buy from agents, be cause I object to paying their commis sion. Tho nurseryman who is largely a dealer is also avoided, for every time trees are handled the chance of mixing varieties increases and it becomes morb difficult to fix responsibility In caso of misrepresentation. Nurserymen are responding to tho popular demand for low-headed trees, but thoy aro not low enough yet. The first branches should bo not moro than 30 Inches from tho ground and less would usunlly bo preferable. Ship ments should bo made as early in tho spring as weather conditions will per mit and upon arrival the trees should bo unpacked and "heeled In" at once. Transplanting should be done Just as early as tho soil will work readily. The roots should never bo exposed for any length of tlmo to tho sun and wind, nnd should always go Into tho soli wet. In tho morning wo tako up M'M jm jh fa THE PROPER W AY OF PRUNING. Theso aro placed on a sled or ".yngon and covered at onco with straw, carpet or burlap and wnter thrown over the entlro bundle until thorough ly wet. Immediately nfter transplant ing, tho trees should bo well mulched with hay, straw, manure or any ma terial not to coaise. This mulching Is essential, no mat ter whether tho clean culture or the sod mulch system Is to be followed. The mulch not only hoIdB moisture around tho roots, but keeps the soil looso and mellow. A good trco well planted and well mulched will mako .- -- VU,JJ ' .a? "l Four-Year-Old Tree Before Pruning. n surprising growth tho first year. 1 have measured as much as flvo feet in our own orchard In soli considered poor. . Pruning Is tho ono operation of tho orchard most noglected or improperly done. As to the roots, they require littlo pruning, bocauso HO per cent, or moro of .the root system Is loft In tho soil, even with the most careful dig ging. All broken or mangled roots bhould be cut off smoothly back to aolld wood, In ordor to give the wounds a chance to heal readily. A loot much longer than the others nyiy bo cut back for the sake of symmetiy und ease of transplanting. After transplanting, the top is cut back to correspond to the loss of roots. Otherwise tho evaporation of moisture from the top may bo moro rapid than tho broken roots can ab sorb it, nnd tha trees suffer, If not die outright. With apple, pear, plum nnd cherry from three to five brunches, should be selected, from those on the tree as It cornea from tho nursery, to u '.JLU -b form tho scaffold branches of tho fn turo top. TIicbo should bo situated alternately along tho trunk, but nover opposlto each other, and should ho cut back to spurs flvo to ten Inches in length. Tho others nro removed en tirely. Each of theso spurs will throw out several branches tho first season, but tho enda'ot tho spurs will usually dry out and begin to decay. Tho second pruning Is confined al most wholly to tho removal of tho dead tips of theso branches or spurs. These arc cut back to the base of tho (list now Ifranches, nnd If tho wood shows no decay tho wound is left to henl. If, however, there aro signs of decnying wood, tho cut is mado at the r.. w. H ... -v. ;e&'' Four-Year-Old Tree After Pruning. base of tho next branch and so cm nn til solid wood is found. Otherwise the decay will run back ln(o tho main branches, or even to tho trunk of the tree, and eventually cause Its death. Every branch that docs not mar the general form of tho top Is loft on the little tree during tho second season to bear leaves and manufacture plant food. Hoot growth dopends upon tho leaves just as much as branch and leaf growth deponds upon tho roots, and tho root system, ivcakcned by trans planting, needs the stimulus of all tho plant food possible In order to renew the parts destioyed. This reuowed vigor Immediately manifests Itself In growth of top, and tho less tho equi librium between root and top is dis turbed the greater will bo tho ten dency to bear fruit so far as tho prun ing factor alono Is concerned. Sub sequent pruning should consist largely In thinning out tho superfluous branches nnd wnyvyard growths suffi cient to admit proper amounts of al and suiiBhlue. Many branches mnrked for removal the second or third season may very profitably bo left until thoy have borne fruit for several years. Mice InJmlcs nro prevented by clean ing up all rubbish In which they might breed nnd congregate, keeping tho soil around tho treo for two or threo foot perfectly bnre. Frequently a littlo moupd of earth six or eight Inches high Is plied and tramped solidly around ttio base of tho tree. So fnr as rabbit injutles aro concerned, tho ro movnl of nil brush, briars, wqods, etc., In wh'ch they aro most likely to con gregate, together with n liberal use of Iho gun and ferret, havo prevented any serious trouble with mo so far. Pesteurlzlng Milk. It Is generally conceded that pasteurizing milk adds nothing to Its wholosomoness. In Tact, It Is, gone-rally believed thnt puro milk Is Injured moro or less by pasteuriza tion. Milk that has not been produced under sanitary conditions' and which nay cpntnln disease producing germi Is far more beneficial and wholesome, if pasteurized than If used In tho raw state. In other words, pasteurization will lmprovo faulty products but will not Improve puro products. Tho best authorities ngreo that It Is better to feed pasteutlzed milk to children than to feed thorn tho averngo milk as It Is delivered in the cllles. We think that aH will agreo that if they can get pur.f and wholesome milk pnstourjzntlou will not lmpiovo it for inljnt feed ing. Practice of Dehorning. Dohornln i affects the cows but little In tho nillh flow and fat production and not nt all If donq three or four weoks before calving. Wo havo seen a great man) cows dehorned and ns n wholo nfi 11 results whatever como from this prac tico, It la a rather cruel operation when the horn is being removed bin after the operation Is over tho co suffers but little, if any. A LITTLE KNOWLEDGE Of Painting Requirements Will Save Much Expense. When ono sees tho Bttrfaco of a houso or other building scaling, or peeling, or Bpotted or blistered, or showing other symptoms of palht "ills caso," it is evident thnt n poor painter has been on tho Job, nnd thnt poor paint was used or possibly that a good painter hnd been dominated by a propoity-owner who know nothing about paint. It Is an easy matter to bo Informed on paint and painting. A completo painting guide, Including a book of color schemes, either for oxterlor or interior specifications for nil kinds of painting, and nn Instrument for detecting adulteration In paint ma terial, with directions for using it, may bo had freo by writing Natlonnl Lend Company, 1902 Trinity llldg., Now York City, nnd asking for House owner's Painting Outfit No. 49. Then, every houscowncr should mako It a point to got only well known rcllablo brands in liuying his materials. Puro whlto lead Is espe cially Important, or tho pnlnt will not provo satisfactory. Tho famous "Dutch Boy Painter" trademark of National Lead Company, tho largest makers of pure whlto lead, is an nb solulo guarantee of tho purity nnd quality of tho .white lead sold under It. A worthy tradesman of this city was discussing optics with a customer the other day, apropos of tho latter's appearance with his first eyo-glnsues. "I've been wearing this pair of spec tacles for nearly twenty years now," remarked tho tradesman, "and my wife a pair Just like thorn for tho same time, and now wo couldn't either of us see without them, and wo never had anything tho matter with our eyes in tho first place." "What did you begin to-wenr them for, then?" inquired tho customer.
