The following dispatch from Bever
ly, .Mass. tho summer home of Presi
dent Tail, tells of the appointment of
Prof. Joseph A. Holmes to un import
ant federal position n( Washington.
Prof. Holmes is a native of Laurens.
a son of the late Rev. X. L. Holmes
and a brother of Mrs. L. S. Fuller.

The dispatch follows:
"Beverly, Mass. September li.?Pres
ident Taft tonight announced the ap
pointment of Joseph Austin Holmes,
of the geological survey, us director
of the new bureau of mines at Wash
ington. Dr. Holmes had been selected
for the place some time ago, but his
appointment was held up. it is under
stood here, on the ground thai Secre
tary Bellinger, under whose depart
ment the new bureau is placed, was
opposed to him. Mr. Holmes is the In
timate personal friend of Clifford Pin
Chot, James It. (Inrueld and F. IL,
Newell, director of the reclamation
service, all three of whom sharply
criticised Mr. Mailinger on the witness
stand in the Mallinger-Pinchot inves
t igat ion.
It was reported here that Secretary
Baliinger fell that Dr. Holmes might
have had a hand in what he term
ed the "conspiracy" against him.
Friends of Mr. Holmes, while admit
ting Ihe hitler's close association and
friendship with Messrs Plnchot, Gar
lield anil Newell, declared, neverthe
less, that he had taken no active part
in the campaign against Mr. Bellinger.
The endorsement of Dr. Holmes for
tho place was almost unanimous. It
came from the mini- operators and the
miners' organizations alike. The pur
pose of ihe new bureau is to Investi
gate and report upon safety appliances
to prevent waste of life.
Dr. Holmes is a native of Laurens.

professor of geology ami natural his
tory at the University of North Caro

geologist of North Carolina.

Hoes To The Legislature.
Mr. lOdwai'd P. MCCravy, a native
Of Cross Hill and a brother of Messrs
(leo. S. and ('has. W. McCravy of this
city, was elected List Tuesday to the
legislature from Plckens county, The
rncc was a four-cornered contest for
two places on the ticket, ami Ihe fact
thai he won out in the first primary
speaks well for his popularity in his
adopted county. Mr. McCravy is well
known in Laurens ami his campaign
has been followed with interest by
his friends here. And I hey will also
walch with added interest his career
in the lower bouse of the general as

friends do not entertain the least
doubt. Ho has been mayor of F.asley.
his home town, ami his nomination
as one of the county's representatives
comes in the nature of a promotion
and a nattering ludorsment of his
administration of the affairs of one of
the principal towns of the county.

supported an exponent of the policy,
well qualified in character and ability
to administer to the governor's oflice,
and a handsome vote for McLeod was

mary, the principle of good citizenship

at stake. In that issue it is to be hoped
that Charleston will stand with the
majority of the people of South Caroli
