MI Lb HO USE We are pained to announce the death of this estimable citizen, which occurred suddenly on Monday last. He had been attending to business on bis farm in the morning, and died in the afternoon from an attack of apoplexy, it is thought. Mr. Milhousc was a man of the strictest integrity, and of great public spirit, whoso influence was widely felt. Orangeburg can ill afford to lose so valued a citizen. THE PIC NIC. Our German friends; whoso apprecia tion of innocent mirth is always brim ming, arranged for tho enjoyment of a pic nie yesterday. At an early hour the gay ribbands, and.ejQQwy dresses wero fluttering on the way to tho rendezvous, where wagons, buggies, and other vehi cles were in waiting to transport the crowd. We liko tho rest were in happy expectation j as wo wero resolved to tit tend, to mingle with tho happy throng, nnd get our shave of good things. Out time was fixed fot aflcruoou, as the morn ing^ duties wcro manifold und pressing, but "there's many a slip?." The clouds gathered swiftly and dark, tradxtho rdhv, how itpoifved; a complete route und panic ensued., and tb?. ardor to escape the pelt-1 3ug showto'fflHBtot dampened, although the dressed/'ironed subdued'' Wo were disapplriateu anfisfelt comfortable, vhUcfdur cpnsid.crato friends were im bbmfo'rtably Interrupted by tho rain.? However nothing daunted, they resolv ed unam voce to finish up tho daj at tho Elliott Hall, where tcrpsiehoro loan* cd its light fan tas tics to the scene. The festival promised to be a success on the green sward, and uudch' the umbrageous spread of boughs, and what it lost in the drenching rain, was fully restored in the' bright sccno of mirth ' and "dancing which'succeeded nfterwaid. MORE NIGHT WORK. On Sunday night the clerk of Mr. H. Walkers was awoke by being called up by a party who asked to bo let in. Ttic clerk refused to open' the floor, and tho papty outside attempted to force off the shutter. Tho. young man fired iu the tlircctioii of the wipdow thrco times, and. the effect was to Idisporselthe intruders. THE " TIMES " TAKES WELL. . A friend calling at our office lately to subscribe for this paper, stated that he had been taking the "Christian Advo cate," but believed he would-stop it, and take tj1k Times, This is very good for us, but while we think. that every family in the County should sub scribe to the Timi:s, yet we are very sure they cannot afford to bo without a reli gious paper. So our advise is: take both; * . A RARE OPPORTUNITY Many/of our farmers nrc: desirious (Ojf| superseding horse-power by steam, and a rare chance is now offered them, to make the trial. We learn that a party of gentlemen, from Charleston and Columbia, have visited our county during the past week, in the interest of English claimants, who had cotton burned by Sherman on his ? . . ? j ? march": "Wo hope that they have been able to obtain the information de?ired. When the question a* to "who burned Co lumbia?" comes up for trial, we will not be eligible as jurymen?our "minds be ing made up If; rCATSER WILHELM. Our enterprising young merchant, Mr. C. D. On Wednesday night, the 1-1 tli insl., Mr. W. K. Crook was exposed to a mur derous assault, from some unknown par ty, who called to him to halt, while walk ing leisurely between tho stores of Mr. Kirk Robinssn and Messrs. Moseloy & Crook. Paying no attention whatever to the summons, he was fired into, and barely escaped with his life, thu ball hav ing passed through his hut. Tho scoun drel, who may have been drunk, was still sober enough to run off as ho shot.' - No clue, up to this time has bceu obtained, as to who hT iI7~but wo call upon our j Town Council toiakethis matter in hand, and do something (whether succcssfully.l or not) to forrqt'out this would-be mur- ' derer.
