LETTER FROM CEDAR SWAMP. Crops Needing Rain?Personal and Religions Mention. Cedar Swamp, May 8: ? The drought is still on in this section, and the samecondition prevailselsewhere with the exception of a few favored places that we have heard from in this county. The cotton fields present a rather discouraging spectacle, with single stalks of cotton here and there, with gaps between and intermincrlpH with a luxuriant growth of . tender grass.apparently in command j of the distressing situation. However, the harrow and small sweeps are being used while waiting on the rain to come, and at the same time farmers are hoping that the seed planted may germinate and spring up in a field free from grass. Very few farmers have completed the arduous task of transplanting their tobacco crop, watering theyoungplants by means of hand labor where the transplanter is not accessible to the small farmer. One of them has taken the precaution to plant his tobacco field to cotton, and if the rain comes in time, he will set the same in tobacco. If the "weed" lives, he will hoe out the cotton, but if he fails on the tobacco,he will cultivate the cotton. The corn crops in this section show good stands.clean and flourishing. The oat crop is fairly good, and as no nitrate of soda was used, the harvest will be as good as was expected. The Brockington baseball team played the local nine here Saturday. Our boys, after bearing for a week the marks of a decent whipping by the "Nesmith lnvincibles," played better ball and won the game from Brockington. A community prayer meeting will be held at the Methodist church every Wednesday in May at 8:30 p. m. The same dates will be observed during June at the Baptist church, and thereafter the meetings will alternate in like manner between these churches. An invitation was extended to Central Presbyterian church to unite and have the meetings at the three churches. We are glad to note that Mr John M Grayson is better, after a few days' illness. Mr Jack MeCulloueh is home from a successful school term at Bryan. The children of Cedar Swamp are being prepared for the annual Children's Day exercises and picnic to take place in the near future. WES. RUNOUT OF TOWN. Jut Punishment of Slanderer of Confederate Veterans. A committee of prominent Kingstree citizens made it their business last Friday afternoon to see that Cris Johnson, an indiscreet young yankee, shook the dirt of Kingstree from his feet on account of a remark he made here Wednesday while the veterans of Williamsburg j were enjoying their annual entertainment by the United Daughters of the Confederacy and attending the meeting of Camp Pressley. During the address of Prof Yates Snowden of the University of South Carolina at the opera house the old cannon was fired at intervals on the court house square and the young man Johnson inquired what was the cause. Upon being informed that it was Memorial day and the can non was being fired in honor of the Confederate veterans, he remarked that "the last d?d one of them should be lined up and shot." The remark was made at the dinner table in the DuBose house and several hearers remonstrated with the indiscreet young man from Oklahoma, but he showed no disposition to retract the statement. Several veterans and sons of veterans got wind of the young man's remark and constituted themselves a committee to invite him out of town, but from Wednesday until Friday he could not be found, being in the country delivering enlarged portraits for a Chicago portrait company. Friday afternoon Johnson was located in the pool room here and the committee called upon him. It gave him 30 minutes in which to leave town and they marched him to the Atlantic Coast Line railroad track and saw him beyond the corporate limits of town heading for Lanes, where he made sure that he Doardea a northbound cram cnac was not scheduled to stop at Kingstree. t MRS. All Medical Treatment Failed to 6ive Mrs i Taylor's Daughter Ease. THEN CHANGE CAME. Mrs Taylor Says "All This Improvement Vas Given by Three Bottles ot Tanlac. How her daughter had been under medical treatment eighteen (18) years without obtaining permanent relief but growing steadily worse in some respecte and how taking just three bottles of Tanlac had relieved her -suffering and had done wonderfule work in restoring her daughter's health, was explained by Mrs W S Taylor, proprietress of the Taylor House, at 1818 J Main St, Columbia, S C, in one of the most remarkable statements given the Tanlac representative by any Columbian. "Irthink the work of Tanlac is almost a miracle, so great was the relief it Gave my daughter," said Mrs Taylor. "It is a wonderful remedy. J never knew anything like it," she added. After stating that she could heartily endorse Tanlac, Mrs Taylor said: "My daughter suffered from a nervous breakdown, it seemed, for five (5) years. The doctors did not know what was the matter with her. She had no appetite, and could not sleep. She had lost weight and lacked energy. Her system was in a terribly run down condition. "She had been under medical j treatment for eighteen (18) years? since she was just a little girl. She was always rather listless, and never was strong and healthy like other girls. Finally, her condition !>ecame so bad that an operation was thought necessary, and she underwent the operation. She did not show the improvement that was expected, however. In fact, she did not seem to receive any particular permanent benefit from it. "Like thousands of others, I suppose, I lx>ught Tanlac l>ecause I had read so many of the testimonials telling of the great value it possesses. It is just wonderful the way Tanlac helped my daughter! Her nerves were quieted by this remedy in a really wonderful way. May 15:?When we awoke this morning we beheld the most pleasing sight that has greeted our eyes in over a month. The rain was falling in gentle showers. How thankful we should be for this blessing. Children's day exercises last Sunday were the best ever held in Prospect church. Everything was carried out with clockwork nicety. To Misses Bela and Freda Carter is due great praise for the training of the children. These young ladies are let ting their light shine. Hon J Davis Carter will attend the Democratic State convention at Columbia Wednesday. Prayer services are held every Sunday evening at Brown school house, at Prospect church at 4 p. m. and at Little Star church at 8 p. m. We hope much good will result therefrom. Mr E F Prosser and family of Johnsonville attended Children's day exercises at Prospect Sunday. W W B. r jAx u , BISCUIT B nuscJe. (iiranpritbraioind oorro. Considerable interest, especially among the children, is being manifested in the "Fly Campaign" which was inaugurated by the Civic league at its last meeting. "A Flyless Kingstree" is their slogan and should be the slogan of every citizen of our town. To keep up the interest among Che children prizes nave been offered far the month of May. There are fourteen prizes ranging in value from two dollars to fifty cents, as follows. Prizes for greatest number of flies: 1st $2.00 2nd 2.00 3rd 1.75 4 th 1.75 5th 1.50 6th 1.50 7th 1.25 8th 1.25 9th 1.00 10th 1.00 11th 75 12th 75 13th 50 14th 50 Every child who enters is paid ten cents for the first two hundred flies he or she brings in and every child who does not win a prize will be paid ten cents at the end of the month, provided he or she brings in at least one pint of flies. After the first two hundred flies are brought! in the children are requested to; bring flies only on Wednesday and [ Saturday of each week between the hours of three and four o'clock p. m. They must not bring less than: half a pint,as the flies are measured instead of counted after the first two hundred. Miss Edwards will! be glad to give to anyone who is in- j terested a plan for a fly trap. It is! hoped that the whole town will co-; operate in destroying the breeding j places of flies. It is the wish of the league to continue this work through the summer months, but unless the ' ! contributors are more numerous than they have been thus far, this j will be impossible. So far the committee has had contributed the sum of sixteen dollars and fifty cents. In an enterprise which is for your good as well as for the good of your neighbor it should be a pleasure as well a privilege to contribute there- j to. During the month of May the children of Kingstree proper may bring their flies to Mrs T E Arrowsmith, the children of "New Town" may bring theirs to Mrs J W Swittenberg and the children of "Nel-: son's Annex" may bring theirs to Mrs B E Clarkson. The prizes will! be awarded the first day of June.j Separate prizes will be awarded to the colored children of the town. Ad Ideal Spring Laiatlve.
