^ Why Fairs Were Established. What do you set out of the county fair? An opportunity to show your prowess with a post maul by ringing a bell at the top of a tower. A kewpie doll or a box of candy from the spinning jenny and three shots at a colored boy's head with a t 1. .11 o oaseoan : County fairs were established to Bp promote agriculture and domestic art through competition and instruction, and most of them receive public aid for that purpose. Concerted efforts |^H are being made by extension workers of the United States Department of Agricultural colleges to bring legiti rmate attractions cf the county or neighborhood fair up to the pulling power of the tent shows and midways, and improvement along that line is already noticeable. The agricultural and domestic exhibitions are present at every fair and they offer opportunities to farm folks vo gather valuable ideas. Are you one of those to be led by a "barker"? Possibly farmers will arrange to exchange favorite varieties of seed. Lifelong friendships have been established from smaller beginnings. The prize tomato men and the prizeapple men and the prize-pumpkin men will be equally willing xo tell you how they did it. Spend a day in this manner once and next season you will require no urging. You probably will be an exhibitor. f Cattle, sheep, a. 1 swine exhibits I often receive casual attention. Suppose instead of just glancing into the pens and passing cn, you start early and go through with the judges. Size up the animals and see how nearly your appraisal checks up with theirs. You can get a fair idea of how to judge animals for yourself when you come to make a purchase, and you ought to get new ideas on breeding and animal husbandry. I Women of the family can take the same suggestion when they go through the domestic arts exhibits. New friendships and new ambitions ought to result from conversations over the production of a prize loaf of bread or a fine piece of needle work. Efforts to make the county fair more instructive and helpful are bringing results. One Southern fair will devote $500 to bringing persons from all parts of the State who excel in various domestic arts, such as butter and cheese making, knitting and fancy needle work. They will display not only the finished articles, but the methods of making them. Last year at the North Carolina State fair, one woman cat in a booth 11? At- ?- ?
