Pierce having been invited by the Democracy of Fredericsburg, (Va.) to attend a celebration of their late victory, addressed them the following letter : Gentlemen : I shall bo constrained by official engagements to deny myself the pleasure of participating in the proposed celebration at Fredericsburg on the 13th inst., but I beg to present my hearty congratulations upon the late signal triumph of sound principles and manly sentiments in the "Old Dominion." Pre-eminently prominent as the sons of Virginia have been, from tho commencement of the Revolution, for their bold ad vocncy of the cause of freedom?for their consistent and patriotic devotion to the only principles Upon which a government, constituted like ours, can be sustained; it may well be doubted, whether they have v ever achieved for themselves more distinguished honor than in the late election, or nave ever rendered a higher service to this Union. If political heresies and religious intolerance could have shaken and carried th?; stronghold of that, party, upon the faithfulness, patriotism, intelligence, and courage of which the country has beeu obliged mainly to rely in every period of serious danger, whether arising from foreigu arms or domestic dissensions, it would have been the occasion, if not of discouragement, yet of profound regret and sorrow, to those who revere the Constitution under which, as a nation, we have attained such amazing advancement, and have realized socially results so unexampled in the history of the human race. The proud elevation on' which the Commonwealth of Virginia now stands is freely Tecognized and deservedly honored from one extremity of the Union to the other. "With my best wishes for a joyous gathering, worthy of such a. State and such a triumph, you will please to accept my cordial thanks for your kind invitation. I am, gentlemen, with high respect, your obliged fellow citizen, Franklin Pierce. Messrs. Eustace Conway, J. G. Galla?her, A. K. Phillips, and S. G. Daniel, Jommittee. Bank Bills not Monev.?In the case of the State of Georgia vs. Russell M. Tuttle, tried before the Superior Court of Chatham county in that State, on the 2d inst., the indictment charged the prisoner with having swindled S. A. Griggs out of six hundred dollars in monev. The counsfll lor the prisoner asked the Cdujrt to instruct the jury that bank bills were not comprehended in the term money, but the money only meant coin; which instruction the Court (counsel having been heard on both rides,) gave; and the evidence having shown it was bank bills that the prisoner received, he was found not guilty. Punch might have added, "Where there is a bar in the room, you will generally find a number of American bucks before it, sucking juleps and smoking cigars." A Yankee who went over to the mother country some time ago, was asked on his return, how he liked Great Britain. "Well," he said, "England is a very nice country, exceedingly fertile, well cultivated, very populous, and very wealthy ; but," continued the Yankee, "I never like to take a morning walk after 'breakfast, because the country is so small that I was afraid of walking oil tlio edge." A follow at a race course was staggering about the track, with more liquor than he could carry. "Hello! what's the matter now ?" said a chap whom tho inebriated individual had just run against. Buhned to Death.?A Virgiuia pnpor tells the following: Mrs. George Kcllar, who resides near Churchville, Augusta county, (Va.,) was riding oo horseback last Thursday and smoking a pipe, when her clothes took on fire and she was burned to d^ath. The Staunton Vindictator states j that her cries were hoard at the house whore she had stopped to litgt her pipe, but before assistance arrived she was dead. Destructive Storm in Kentucky.? The Louisville Courier learns that, a tremendous storm of wind, rain and hail passed over Franklin county, in that State, on the IOth instant, prostrating tho wheat, frr:t trees and fences in every direction. The hail, it is said, was piled up in someplace* six feet. The damages are estimated at *100,000.
