for the young people so tliey might
takemore interest
1 was well pleased with the result
until the article appeared in the Her
ald showing us that we were not doing
any good and that all our efforts were
of no avail
I am loathe to helieve that this is
the case however and as I feel
sure that many persons of our mem
bership have been benefitted I feel
fully repaid and so should every
member who contributed either liter
ary or financially
It has been recommended and urged
by your President in each of his mes
sages that the members should use
the library and you can refer to the
message of July 190S where it was
urged to use the rooms mote Bv
this was meant that members shouiJ
come up bring their friends mike
them feel at home and form such cir
cles as would be convenient 1o the
members in furthering Jewish thought
and ethics
Now as to people being luied to
take membership in this Socieiv
through its name I only hav2 this to
say The Jewish Literary Society ol
Houston Texas ranks first in literary
work of any Society in the State This
expression was uttered by one of oik
much beloved Rabbis Dr Cohen of
Galveston Texas and as to the goncl
the Society is doing there oui be no
question as all officers of othc liter
ary societies in the State hold up this
Society as an ideal to their members
Now I will say that should things
not be done as you by this I mean
any member of the Society should
like come up to the board meetings
you are not only welcome but urged
to come up and be heard and if you
have any suggestions to make the
board will be only too glad to take it
up and deliberate on it Many good
moves have been started by a member
who had no vote on the board
I now wish to thank the editor for
his kind indulgence and also for soace
allotted me and I hope that these
true statistics of the Jewish Literary
Society may show the Jewish popula
tion of Houston and elsewhere what
is being done in the rooms of the So
ciety and that t may be the means
THE JEWISH HERALD
of an increase in membershipi and I
can assure each and everyone that ts
lond as I am the presiding officer of
the Jewish Literary Society the con
stitution and all its bylaws will be
followed out to the letter
