All practical men know and have a
motto but ask them what has become
of their motto What becomes of
your plan when the world rubs up
against it The Jewish Literary So
ciety has a motto and will have a mot
to until it has captured every Jewish
stronghold to right living and right
thinking Here in the South with a
climate almost identical to that of
Palestine the sacred fire shall be
lighted and become a beacon all over
the United States The sacred fire
kindled in this broad Southland shall
start into an all conquering statewide
conflagration setting aglow every
Jewish heart with the vision that
Moses saw in the buring bush and
make that vision a live issue in our
daily lives
The Jewish Literary Society may
be presumptuous but those who are
near and dear to it are no braggers
There is something in their blood that
tells a stranger this is a conquering
host Now hands off Beware This
is Israels host that are marching with
fire and brimstone its pillar of fire by
night and dark cloud by day
It is true we are like the tailor and
the architect in carrying out our mot
to we give away to one thing and
add another but like the tailor and
the architect the main feature of our
plan of our motto is there and who
will daresay we have not lived up to
our motto
Those that have lived in Houston
before the Jewish Literary Society
still residing
was founded and are
ing here and are acquainted with
the status of the Jewish young men
before and now need no great demon
stration that this society has a motto
and that it has had one ever since it
has been founded now going on its
fourth year The instance of our last
mock trial is in itself a world of tes
timony to that effect
It is true we can do and we shall
do more God give us strength The
impractical person the man of words
does not know that we have to buck
up against life each a different iden
tity in himself pulling in thousand dif
ferent directions and the task of the
practical man is to harmonize all this
divergence and dole out the same time
a prevention of the motto Herbert
Spencer has taught us the doctrine of
evolution instead of Revolution We
cannot stuff down into the throats of
our young men and women at one time
whole solid tracts of Jewish learning
It must be done gradually and by de
grees They have not been accustom
ed to it We have to Fletcherize with
them as it is now the fashion so that
they can digest at all
Gradually a literary taste will be de
veloped a passionate love for things
Jewish and a strong Jewish proprie
ty and that through our motto Con
duct Culture and Judaism
We have a motto and we shall ever
have one and those who have seen the
Society grow from its infancy know
the man behind the child The Jewish
Literary Society has been called Lit
tle Johnny Literary we shall now call
it Judas Maccabeus
