The'total value of the mineral
production of Alaska for 1908 is estimated by A.H.Brooks,of the United States Geological Survey, at $19,600,000, as compared with *20,871,771 for 1907. The decr ease is to be charged to the gold placers and copper mines,as most of the other mining industries of the Territory show an increase in value of output. The value of the total mineral production of Alaska from 1880,when mining first began.to theclose of 19< 'S, is.in round numbers.*148.000,000. Of this amount the gold mines have produced about $142,000,0 00,the silver mines about *1.150, OOO.and the copper *4.100,000. The balance represents the value of the marble, gypsum, tin .and coal output. Mileage of Alaska railways Dec. 4. 190S. 299.4. U.S-G.S.Press Bulletin i >ccasionally a box containing different articles of value is rec eived at the school with no mark of any kind by which the send ers might be identified. One such box was received at the school the first of this month containing books which will be of use to the work here. We wish to express our thanks through the Thlinget. The school term is more than half gone,and the assigned work in most of the grades has been accomplished. The eighth grade pupils are putting forth their best efforts to complete the course by the last of May. There has been an increase of thirty in the enrollment since the beginning of school, making a total of 115 pupils. On January 17 th we observed thecommunion of the Lord's Sup per in our Thlinget Church. This was the close of the week set aside as the week of prayer and we were able to enter into the service in a thoughtful spirit that made it truly a means of grace to every one present. Before the communion service W. G. Beattie, superintendent of the Training School was ordained ruling elder in the church, hav ing been duly elected four weeks before' in our congregational meeting. Some good friend in the States made the church here a present of an individual communion set which was used on this occasion for the first time Some of us were afraid there would be a little con fusion on account of the indivi dual cups but we were relieved to see that everything moved along very smoothly A stranger would hardly have notice that we j were introducing any new meth od of observing the communion Several of the members expres sed themselves as being delighted : with the set. A LIST or ALASKAN BIRDS Bulletin No. 3 of the Society of Alaskan Natural History and Ethnology is being printed by ' Our printing department. It has been desided to issue in I the Thlinget the list of Alaskan Birds. The Bulletin is a check list of the Birds of Alaska com piled from E. W.
