But one pump is at work as yet, but within a few days auothei will be started, so that both shafts •will be uuwatered. As soon as this is done, the property will be tlior oughly sampled, and plans for the operation of the mine and treatment of the ore will then be worked out. A small crew is all that is at work at present of course, but as soon as the place is in shape to accommodate more the number will be Increased. Paris, Sept. 16—Italian submarines operating in the Adriatic have sunk two Austrian torpedo boat destroyers during the past week. The balance of the Austrian fleet is now bottled up at Pola so tightly that it is im possible for anything but the smaller vessels to come out. -» -. DOLPHIN SOUTHBOUND Completing a quick trip north, the Dolphin made port this morning on her way to Seattle. For cargo she bad 31 boxes of fresh salmon on board, 40 boxes of halibut, and 400 cases of canned salmon. After leav ing here she was to call in at Hidden Inlet, where she will take on 5,000 eases of salmon. She had a full house as far as passengers are con cerned when she left this port, hav ing taken on parts of the Roe Point Chomlev and Scowl Arm cannery crews. ! _■ - AT THE GRAND Martha Russel is appearing tonight in The Kentucky Feud, a Warner feature in three parts. She has no passengers for Ketchikan, however. The Alliance sailed at ten, but will call in at Boat Harbor on the way up. which will delay her. The Evans left at midnight. Mats. -♦ RECALLED Vienna, Sept. 16—The Austro-Hun garian government issued a state ment this morning denying that it had recalled Ambassador Dumba from the I’nited States. The bulletin also said that the government had been in receipt of no demand for his re call. Washington, Sept. 16—Secretary of the Interior, Franklvn K. Lane, has declared himself in favor of a liberal appropriation for railroad construc tion in Alaska. To this end he will ask the next Congress for an appro priation of from eight to ten million dollars, so that the work of construc tion can be rushed during 1916. has come for Glenn but is ordered a way. British submarines are operat ing in the Sea of Marmora so effect ually that transports cannot be used on that body of water, so the situa tion of the defenders is now precar ious. - 10REM0NEY London, Sept. 16—Premier Asquith last night asked Parliament for a seventh credit of one and one-quarter billions of dollars. Parliament will grant his request, but it is under stood that additional taxes must be levied to meet the demand. —-♦ Word was received from Hadlej this afternoon stating that the Granby company is bringing over to town the body of Dick Milke who was ac cidently killed yesterday while work ing at the Mamie Mine. The boat with the body and witnesses will probably arrive this evening short ly after six, and an inquest will be •held tonight. -♦ SEVERAL SCHOONERS IN The halibut boats Republic and Yakutat are in port, having recent ly arrived from the south. They will take on bait and go out to the banks. The schooner Washington, which had been under charter to the Santa Ana cannery, has been released and as soon as a crew can be secured will go out after halibut. The schooner Helgeland. which had the bad luck to drop her propellor on her last trip to the banks, is back in commision again. CITY DUDS The passage of an early closing or dinance last night was the chief or der of business at the Council meet ing. It provides that all saloons, bowling alleys, pool nnd billiard rooms, etc., in Ketchikan shall here after close at midnight and remain closed until six o’clock the follow ing morning. In addition to this, routine matters and the reports of officers and com mitties took up the greater part of the evening. Mayor Beegle asked for a leave of several months to allow him to go south on business. Councilman F. E. Hvus was elected mayor pro-tern, to serve during his absence. -■ Columbia, S. C., Sept. The official count in the “Wet and Dry” elec tion of Tuesday, Bhows a majority of over twenty thousand votes in favor of a dry state. This means that as the total vote was but little over sixty thousand the proportion of dry to wet votes was almost two to one. NEW m Washington, Sept. 16—Patrick Mc Donald has been appointed postmast er of Poorman, Alaska, a new post office recently created, Samuel Mc Farlane was named as postmaster of Kumley, Alaska. ♦ THE JITNEY WINNEBS Alverna Caughrean won out in a hot race for the Dream Jitney Bus at the Dream last night. THE Dili New York, Sept. 16—It uo%v looks as though the request for a billion dollar loan from the Allies will be granted by the big banking institu tions of this city. The terms of the loan have been practically agreed up on, and the interest rate will be five per cent. This means that the an nual interest on this loan alone will be fifty millions of dollars, or close to a million dollars a week. -♦- * The steam halibut vessel Manhattan arrived up from Vancouver this morn ing. CAPTURED Berlin, Sept. 16—The capture cf the fortress of Pinska in southern Russia is announced. This is taken to indicate that there is little ground for the Russian claims that their armies have flanked the. German right wing, as vonMnckensen would hardly ho pushing forward his cen ter if his flank was id danger. Tinska is one of the largest towns in the Russian province of Minsk. OUTRESERVES Petrograi, Sept. 16—A general order has been published and posted throughout Russia calling to the col ors the reserves of the territorial army.
