Southeastern Alaska in particular and the Territory n general. KETCHIKAN, ALASKA. SATURDAY, OCT. 9, 1915. THE WORLD IS MAD! The world is mad! It is an ugly phrase, but it is perhaps the shortest and most comprehensive phrase that can be used with which to define the world’s present troublesome area. Nothing like it has ever been seen be fore. The mind of man is far short of preceptive power to grasp the full meaning of the carnage carried on throughout the old world. The whole of Europe is in a deadly embrace, while Japan, China and the United State, three of the most powerful nations of the world are watching, waiting for the opportunity to declare—by actions— their madness. What is the world mad about ? If we stop for a moment of meditation, our mind wanders in search of even a shadow of an excuse to ac count for the terrible slaughter throughout the old world. A reflection of the carnage presents itself to our vision and brings the mind back to realize that the world Is mad, otherwise peace would reign. Yet the murdering of innocents of any wrong doings is being carried on from day to day with apparent renewed ferocity. Just think; for Christian leaders to collect herds of hundreds of thous ands of men together; march them day and night without rest, live in dirt and filth like brutes, pillage, burn and devastate village after village with nothing else on their minds but to reach another herd—whose leaders are al so mad—rush upon it, shed rivers of blood, cover fields with mangled flesh, leaving wives, children and old parents behind to suffer and possibly die of hunger. Is not this madness! -+ + i “DRESS-UP” WEEK The Seattle Post-Intellingencer says: “In their role as breadwinners father and the boys have not always given the attention to matters of manly raiment that their importance in the equation of life demands. Their hats have too often become passe, their neckties frayed, and their trousers baggy at the knees and shiny as to surface. Too often anything has been made to do that was not an absolute interference with business. Local arbitets of dress bold logically that careless, raiment does interfere with business. They Insist that a neatly dressed man of trim appearance is capable of getting and accomplishing more business than a careless, slatternly dressed man. So we are to have a "ilress-up week,” beginning with October 10 next. "Local haberdasheries, •clothing and shoe stores will have special show window displays for the week ami specially attractive stocks inside. It will be a sartorial education and is expected to induce a new Interest and pride of life in the manly bosom. Generally, the word is to "spruce up ” and once reminded of the need for It, reiteration should be unnecessary. It is an excellent idea and the whole community should push it along.” But, supposing that a man owes a bill to his groc er, for instance; and that he has the money to pay It; and supposing that he is "shabby.” or that "his trousers are baggy at the knees and shiny as to surface” and all that. Would lie be justified in providing him self with a new Shit instead of paying the bill? YVe wonder. Many there are who will agree that In doing so he would be helping his business, at the game time they would equally agree that he was interfering with the grocer's business, which is entirely wrong from whatever angle one choses to look at it. Dress well if you can but pay your bills if you must. A man should not be measured by the clothes he wears anyhow. ALASKA’S WONDERFUL GLACIERS (From Leslies) A glacier is a gigantic field of ice pushing Its ap palling weight from the mountain fastness into the sea. Columbia glacier is from 300 to 400 feet high and extends for over four miles. It has been calculated that Its area of iee would cover a large fraction of the entire state of Rhode Island. AVe need not go to Europe to see glaciers. Here they are within five days of Seattle the finest Li tiic world and “all in America.” Everybody was on deck drinkiug in the magnificent spectacle. Nearer and nearer the Watson drew. The vast field of Ice was sweeping across the horizon, showing masses of clear, translucent blue, masses of gray and others shaded brown, sloping at the-ends into a dark line of snow, leo and gravel. The steamer moved cautiously until the ex cited passengers, with exclamations of delight, found that they were Within 1,500 yards of the magnifieient glacier. The warmth of summer had given way to the coolness of winter as the stiff breeze from the enormous mass of Ice swept by. The glacier’s sea ling was streaked and splin tered. At the center a mammoth cave extended a thous and feet. Enormous masses of the crystalline pallisade broke off at intervals and fell into the sea with the sound of distant thunder. The shrill bugle call to lunch sound ed, but the passengers were deaf to the call that had been alwavs welcomed. They stood enthralled and left the deck only when the steamer turned back on its course and the glacier was slowly lost from view.—John A. Sleicher. ■-+ + 4 The State of Ohio has abolished 1,493 saloons since its new liquor license law became operative a year ago. This is exclusive of those forced to close because of the proportion to population of one bar to each 500 residents. -+ 4 4 The benefit that the hospital will derive from the opera “Queen Esther,” while considerable, will not be sufficient. We must keep up the good work. KETCHIKAN PUBLIC LIBRARY AND FREE READING ROOM 10 A. M. to 10 P. M. MRS. J. B.
