A DANGEROUS WEAPON.
The boycott is a weapon more dangerous
to those who wield It tlum It is to those
against whom it is directed. It's a boomer
ang; emplojed by cowards.
An exchange says that the Clevoland people
"who ure" now coming to their senses, have
discovered that society would be lntol-
arable If , It had no defense against the
boj cott, vcan tahe example of St, Louis. 'In
1688 Uiere was a great railroad strike in the
west on the Gould Hues. Tho boycott was
'was then resorted to and applied in St.
. Louis against merchants, professional men,
i butcher's and bailors and 'all whohave doal
ing8 with tho public. Hut the St. Louis
people were oqunl to the occasion. They
Ihirandlutcly organized and gave the boyoot
ters to understand that thoy would bo
remembered, and w hen order was restored
they too would find themselves under tho
'ban that would sear and burn to tho bono.
Every dealor who truoklcd to the boycott and
gavo it support was put into tho category
of the boycotter himself, and warned "that
those assailed by the bocotter would btrlko
baclt. The result was that tho bojeott col
lapsed. Like the coward that it Is, it whined
and withdrew its supporters and went grov
eling in the dust to have the ban lifted from
them. It was a case of fighting 11 ro with fire,
and the right won. Rotall&tion is not to bo
approved; the taking of tho law into ono's
" own hands cannot be udvlsed. But when a
man is driven into a corner, innocent of
offensoiond for lmply pursuing his inallon-
able right as a man, he is a cowardly cur
Swho will not strike baok, If tho Clevoland
people had tho wit and courago of thoo of
St. Louts they would never have cowered
under the club of tho boj cott."
