The dow noui appealed to DJ tho
heviest on the hills south and west of
town, though it was a peifect avalanche
on all sides, and great bodies of earth
were moved fiom their places and de
posited in the streets and in the ro'id
west of town, but the heaviest land
slide was fiom tho hill directly south of
town. A body of rocks and earth
weighing perhaps more than a thousand
tons was washed down fiom the side
hill and dopoaitod on tho railroad track
in the rear of Libiary Hall, and had it
not boon for tho openings between t..e
houses, tluough which the accumulated
water could escapo, there is but little
doubt that tho row of adobe buildings
south of Main street, including tho
Queen Hotel, Mansion house, Tin f and
1'ieo Coinage saloons, would be a pile
of ruins this mom ing. As it was a per
fect river of water ran through the
hallway of tho Queen hotel, and alpo
through tho openings between the
buildings, which if it had not escaped
in this way would have melted these
adobo buildings down, for tlu mud and
rocks had formed a pei feet dam on the
railroad track and tho" water would
have accuinulatod to a; depth of at
least fiom six to ten fim "iviMi"t tlif
