HUNT ASKS AID OF MAINE GOVERNOR IN STATE RIGHTS FIGHT Phoenix, Ariz., Dec. 5 ( AP) —Governor G. W. P. Hunt in a letter to Governor William T. Gardiner of Maine has sought that exe cutive’s aid in Arizona’s fight against what he terms “encroachment by the fed eral government on state affairs.” “I have long admired the position Maine has taken in regards to the right to con trol her own water power, Hunt said, “but am very doubtful if your state can maintain that position if it reties on a single-handed resistence of the encroach ment of federal activities in what should be state af fairs.” The chief executive dis cussed the Boulder Dam bill in his letter to Gardiner, and enclosed a copy of a resolu tion passed by the western governor’s conference at Portland, Ore,, concerning the matter . “There is growing opposi tion in the west to federal control of mining, forest and grazing lands,” the gover nor said, “to the extension of park and Indian reservations and the efforts of the federal bureaus to control the water and power of western streams. “The government is not only making reservations out of the public domain, but it purchasing or making ex changes for private lands for the same purpose. This letter action is as dangerous to the east as to the west, because if it is constitutional a wealthy nation can destroy a state bv purchasing and withdrawing land from state city and county taxation.” — Winslow Daily Mail. HUNT URGES ARIZONA TO OBSERVE DECEMBER 6TH AS A BIBLE SUNDAY Phoenix, Ariz., Dec. 2 Governor Geo. W. P. Hunt urges the observance of Lni versal Bible Sunday on next Sunday, Dec. 6, by the churches of Arizona, The American Bible Socie ty, an interdenominatiinal agency engaged in the circu lating of the Scriptures, and which last year put into dis tribution over twelve million volumes of Scripture in two hundred and eighty-five lan guages, has promoted Uni versal Sunday for over a de cade. In commending Universal Bibile Sunday Governor Hunt says: “Any movement that will encourage the more general reading of the Holy Bible is praise-worthy. It is a great moral teacher. “Throughout my public career I have taken a deep interest in prison problems: and in the reformaton of those who fall within the toils of the law. In an ex perience of seven terms as chief executive of the Sate of Arizona paying close at tenton to reformation of cri minals. I have observed very few cases wherein regular and consistent students of the Holy Bible become in mates of our state reforma tories and penal institutions.” o Gigantic Structure Herodotus estimated that 100,00<i men were engaged for 20 years i' l building the Great pyramid. ONLY A DOG Just a homely cur. Give him a kick in the ribs, and shy club at him he’s only a dog. But investigation will dis close that somewhere there is a boy perchance a man to whom the cur belongs, and for whom they have the kindliest feelings. Somewhere there is a boy who will tell you that it is his dog, or a man with whom you can pick a fight no quicker than to kick his dog. What does this mean? Just this —a boy has lost much of I the possibilities of life if con ditions will not permit him to own a dog. It matters not what the breed, training, color or disposition. The matter of ownership enters into the boys nature. And why not. let all else turn against the boy. and his dog remains faithful to him ready if needs be to risk his own life for its master. Can you explain why it is that a boy takes to a dog. and a dog to a boy? We cannot, but there is a tie between the two that fills a place in life. It seems to be the popular thing to look upon a dog as an imposter. Os course, when neglected, he becomes a nuisance, but this is the fuult of the owner, usually. and not the dog. and there is something wrong with a man who cannot in a measure re j spond to the devotion of a dog to his master. Here is the startling fact that we are leading up to which is worthy of consider ation before you outlaw the dog. A recent survey of criminals in a large peniten tiary disclosed that less than one per cent of the inmates had a pet when he was a boy. If that is the basis to work from, a pet is a necessi ty for a child.—Exchange.
