The Williams contingent began, arriv

came in with the crowd Monday morn

As a crowning event, of the first
day, nothing could bo more fitting
than the grand ballet Babbitt's Opera.

ond, S0. This race, was run under
the distance rule any horso 180, feet
behind, at the finish in, first heat being
shut out or remaining beats.
Robert G. won first heat. Soltalre
second. Fox, Goldnote aud Baby were
distanced, leaving only Robert G. and
Soltalre in tbe race
Soltalre won second 'heat, Robert G.
second. In this heat Soltalre Injured
himself aud was so badly cripi'led that
ha could not finish tbe race. Tbe
judges therefore declared all sfdo bets
off and awarded first money to Robert
G. and second to Soltaire. This sec
ond heat is said by race men to be tin
best race ever ran in Coconino county.
The. next event on the program was
a saddle horse race, open only to
known saddle horses, 300 yards. The

The boys' pony race was from a
grand-stand poiut of view, one of the
prettiest races on the program. The
start was made at the judges stand
and the race was for one mile, free to
all boys under 1C years of age. The
following entries were made, nine in
nil: Cricket, Frank Fairchilil; Billy,
Louis Bcrns; Sorrel Top, George New
man; To be, Chester Black; Blue Fly.

Blue Fly then entered the raco for all
he was worth, but fiulsbed third. His
youthful rider after the race inquired,
very seriously, if there was any third
money, aud when he feuud there was
pone, was very anxious to run a match
race with any pony ou the ground.
Burring this ono incident theporiiw
ran splendidly, the boys keeping their
mounts well iu band, and the runners
were bunched during the
quarters. They finished
together.

Star came in about 100 feet ahead of
Bay Dick'.
A picked nine, composed of Winslow
and Flagstaff players, contested with
the Williams team at 2:46. 'The game
lasted an, hour and a bait and resulted
