THE CASA GRANDE VALLEY.
Information for Those Sseking Homes In the Garden Spot of the West. Pinal oonnty was organized in 1875 from portions of Pima, Maricopa and Yavapai counties, and contains an area of 5,3rtS square miles, or iJSj.aM acres, one-third of which could be made productive by a systematic torajro of the surplus water now running to waste, next to Maricopa it is the most im- fortant agricultural county in the Territory, t it traversed from east to west by the Southern Pacific railroad, and a branch of the great Santa Fe system is now approach ing from the north. The objective point of this road is a connection wit If the Sonora road, of the same system. The Southern Pacific is also building in this direction from Terape.and it is confidently believe that work will not cease until the Doer Creek coal fields are reached and connection is made with another branch of thtit road run ning from Bowie to Ulebe and now complet ed to Fort Thomas. Thus it will be iw!l that Pinal county Is the thaatcr of railroad building at the pres ent time, and inside of a year Florence, the oouuty seat, will be A RilLKJAB CEXTES." At present it contains a population 7of ab'xit 1500, but with the completion oE these two railroads and the Butte reservoir no eity in Arizona can anproaeh it for natural advantages, and a large increase ia popula tion will follow. Florence is at an elevation f 1553 feet ave sea level, situated near the Gila river. tweMty-six miles northwest of the railroiiti rtation of Casa Gr.-uule, with which it is Crtun3v'ted by an elegantly equipped daily stage line. Going and coming stupes run by the old Casa Uraude ruins, and passensrs arc allowed a short time. ti in spect them. TUare are many handsome pri vate' residences ia Florence, several brick stores, pood howl, an excellent , gradeil school employing four teachers, churches, secret societies, ft Commercial Ciub, a news paper (the only ne in the county), and the handsomest court house in the Territory. Here is held the United States Court for the district composed of Gila. Graham and Pinal counties. The streets are lined with shade trees, which impart an air of oornfort on the warmest days. MODUOTB Or THE VAIAKY. Unlike the Salt river, the waters of the Gila are fresh and pure; the soil contains no alkali, is a deep, rich gray ash, especially adapted to tho growth of the prune, olive, almond. pea-'h, fig, pear, apricot and fruits f all kinds, w kick pay largely on tho invest ment. It is also the natural home of alfalfa, which errows in the laot oroliiie manner. The gra(e does exceptionally well in this valley, and wins and raisin culture is destin ed to become a prominent industry. Citrus fruits have ben cultivated U a limited extent; there are a number of orange trees ia tlm neighborhood of Florence which beur their gaiden fruit each year without pro tection, and a few date palm trees are also in f nil bearing. Vhe season is from six weeks to two months earlier than Southern Califor nia, which gives fruit growers an appreciat ed advantage in T3 BAHLY MAKKBTS. The absence of fops and nightly dews is a formidable obstacle to the destructive nnd unsightly scale-bug:, und the fruits of the va'ley are all bright and clean. All tho agri euitural products of temperate and semi tropic cones iye easily grown here, the Ion? seasons giving a succession of crops that double or treble the productive value of the land. FBICB8 01 1AKD. Improved lands, with government title and water right, can be bought for from 120 to $r0 per acre, according to location and im provements. In the immediate neighbor hood and to the south of the Casa Grande -ruins there are thousands of acres covered with a heavv growth of mestiuite timber yet -open t settlement. These are among the cuoicest in tho valley. Water in inexhausti hle oiiantitv is found at a depth of from twenty to thirty feet; In fact, a river seems to be flowing underneatn. uere is a splen did opportunity to take up and improve land with a pumping system of irrigation, which is said to be successful on small tracts. However, with the completion of the Butte "reservoir, pumping will be a thing of the past, and it is only mentioned here for the purpose of showing what can be done, and to magnify the further tact that what was once considered Alt VXISBABITAjBLB DESKBT Is in truth the most productive laud on the globe, and that there is water in abundance to brmyr every loot or it under cultivation, only waiting for the magic wand of capital to develop it. There is no water-storage scheme on the Pacitie coast that has one-half the natural advantages and so few engineer ing difficulties as the Butte reservoir. Here nature has built the abutments in ever-living rock, and all that is left for man to do is o put'in the headgate, the bluffs which form the gorge being only separated by a paltry 2J0 feet. A country is drained through this narrow canyon 200 miles square, representing 40.000 square miles, or larger than Maine and Massachusettscombincd. The rainfall is suf ficient to till the reservoir twice a year, and the land to be brought under cultivation is practically limitless. This may read like a fairy tale, but it is every word true,- and has been verified time and again. CASA OBAKDI KEBKEVOIE. The reservoir of the Casa Grande Valley Canal company is the largest in the territory. It covers a surface of WW) acres, with an aver age depth of 12 feet, and contains abont eight thousand million gallons of water. It is sit uated fifteen mites southwest of Florence. A levee of earth has been thrown np across -a depression in the plain 14,000 feet in length, 125 feet in width at the bottom and 25 feet in -width at top, 2 to 1 slope on each side, and an average height of 25 feet. The waste is regu iated by 3 cast iron pipes J feet in diameter, Bet in solirt masonry, reguiarec! ny gates ana tower. Tiiis reservoir cost U5U,OO0, and sup plies water for 8,000 acres. Meteorological Statistics. Their condition, however, was more the result of whisky than beat. The air is so dry here that a registered temperature of 110 degrees is not as oppres sive as ISO degrees ia St. Louis or New York. Tho Signal Service bureau has recognized this fact, and reports the difference betweed the nnparent and sensible tamperatnre to be fulls SJ degrees. At nearly all times there is a pleasant breeze; the nights are invariably cool in the summer, and out-door labor is performed without serious discomfort to either maa or beast on the warmest days. Very seldom does the thermometer get be low tha f ree-ing point in winter, and in the gardens of Florence to-day are castor bean plants two years or more old, I'STOUCHED. BY PBOST.
