Arizona Business Review (ARIZONA MINING JOURNAL) By Charles F. Wjllis, Copper has hit its high price of the year and is continuing to ad vance during the past week. A wire from New York, states that copper has actually been 8old at 11 cents. The past week has seen the price gradually rise and the predictions ot 15 cent copper by the beginning of the. New Year, bid fair- to be realized. November sales just about equal'ed production .165,000,000 - pounds, so that the surplus remains - at about 225,000,000 but the inquiries for cop per for delivery, during .the first three months of 1923 are of consider able excess volume. The buying for German, French: and British consum ers is also picking up. ' "The New Year looks bright ' in deed," stated P. G. Beckett, general manager :of the Phelps Dodge Cor poration. "The November - demand will be unusually brisk .and ; we hae reason to believe that the , demand will continue heavy.", Development of the domestic market has ben one of the m6st en couraging signs the industry has witnessed in months," stated F. W-i Maclennan, general manager of the Miami Copper Company, "Surplus stocks have been reduced to-normal -"-another encouraging' sign and. : we are looking forward to : normal, run ning of the mines." .... '. ' ' The reports a few days ago tnai the Globe . Miamf tlhjtrict was, flood ing -with- excess labor- is a1 good 'sign and looks as though- the' handicap due- to labor shortage would-be re moved shortly. - ' News -continues to come of resump tion of operations and ..increased-activities. The most important -.piece of news along this line, Is the an-. nouncement that the Phelps Dodge Corporation, Bisbeei Arizona, expect to resume steam-' shovel operations on' Sacramento Hill as- soon as the hill and mill operations can be-imade reatlv - for-:ore - extraction. t- Beckett, general manager, states that this will probably -be aoout. way or June of 1923. Men will be gradually employed on this work until tne mil 500 needed are secured. The Phelps Dodge Corporation, Morenci, Arizona, branch has com pleted the . installation, of the new unit in No. 6 concentrator, and . will immediately be put in operation. -I. P. Hodgson, general manager, states that 500 men are now on the pay roll and more are needed. This new unit will be able to treat 7000 tons daily, bringing the output UP to 1.400 tons daily. T. O. McGrath. Bisbee, it was reported that they had decided to resume operations on ' that prop erty when copper reached fifteen cents It is anticipated that the Shattuck, another of the large mines, will be going shortly. - The increase in the quarterly di vidend of the United Verde Extension from 25 to iiOjcents is also a mark of confidence in the future and the feeling that it is no longer neces sary to build up the surplus. BISBEE The general offices of v.Q Pi,0ina Dodee Corporation will shortly be moved to Douglas, Ari zona, P. G. Beckett, general manager, from Bisbee. where they have been located for the past six months, due to the absence of G. H. Dowell. gen eral manager of the Copper Queen branch there.
