To study the situation, discuss it with the several agency offices con cerned, and to report back in larch on the form of a grazing permit to be.used • A committee was appointed by Chairman I aide lanuel. Forking on the problem are Stephen Listo, George P. ilorris, Jose L. Francisco Joe Adams, and .anon Chavez. Ir. Chavez is Vice-Chairman of the tribe and also in charge of the tribal herd. The group has already met and or ganized. Plans for a grazing permit are a step in preparation of tribal handling of water development. An IID-14 tractor given to the tribe several years ago by the Agency has been transferred to the hast Chuichu farmers, cotton ranchers in need of heavy equipment. It has been in storage at Chuichu. The tribe has been asked to provide gravel for the maintenance of the road from, the end of the pavement at Forth homelic Village to the reservation Foundry, at Chuichu. The request was made to the tribal council by Pinal County highway engineer at Florence. A request by br, John i, Paul of Tale University to conduct a polio research project on the reservation was denied by the council. PAPAGO Tl-ZhAL HOhh TO CLOGG JUIIF 30. 1953 June 30, 1958 is the closing date of the tribal roll now being taken, according to recent tribal council action. After that time, names will be added to the rolls at a charge to be determined later by the council. Continued Since 1956, Papagos have been urged to complete forms in order that the roil might be completed. This will be the first tribal roll taken since about 1940. ./lien completed, the roll will be valuable for several reasons. It will provide a list and number of Papagos living both off and on the reservations. It will also be useful in the future in determining which persons should and may share on possible distribution of finan cial benefits. Any person of one-half or more Papago blood is counted as a Papago, whether he lives on a Papago or other reservation or off reservation, ken and women of 21 years and more may complete the roll forms for themselves or for minor children. Parents are also permit ted to complete roll forms for sons in service away from home. Forms are available at the tribal office and are also being sent to Indian Centers in Los Angeles, Chicago, and Tulsa. They will be sent or given to Papagos on request from the tribal office, according to Tribal Chairman hark kanuel. 7c date, about two-thirds of the estimated number of Papagos entitled to be on the roll are thought to have comple ted the forms. As part ox his training program, he has V been taking a course this winter at Geo rge "Washington University. i.-rs, llarcho will be remembered as Josephine -Vafael, a graduate of nurs ing at Ganado and formerly employed as a field nurse at Sells. V/ith them are the couple 9 s children - karen, . .onald, I arcel, and honna.
