PAPAGO POTTERY aND POTTERS ARE SUBJECTS OF BOOK WITH PICTURES OF OLD AND NEW ITEMS Papago pottery is the subject of a book recently published by the University of Washington press, Seattle. Bernard Fontana, University of Arizona professor living on the west edge of the San Xavier 71 shoe-string strip, 7 ' is the one of the four authors best known to Papagos. Photographs of 1894 show making of pottery now in storing saguaro syrup. The book is dedi cated to Listiana Francisco of Pan Tak, 'Papago potter whose skill as a craftsman was best among her people. 71 Among other potters mentioned in the book are Juanita Ahil Ellanistine Antone, Laura Antone, Anita Antone, Rosa Antone, Dolores Chico, Mary Sue Carmen, Juanita Enos, Avalina Ignacio, Elena Jose, Laura Kermen, Raphael Domingo, Elnora Lopez, Chona Montana, Victoria Marqueta, Savilla Miguel, Velena Pablo, Lucy Pablo, Carmen Ramon, Rosario Smith, Lucy Stevens, Cianna Thomas, and Rita Valenzuela. Spellings of the names of the potters are those used in the book. HERE AND THERE Annie Fields, well-known Ft. Mohave Indian potter, was a reservation visitor last month. She was accompanied by her family, Edwin and Lillian F Cleveland and Barney Fields. ft ft -ft Eight pictures of the 27th annual Papago Rodeo action and persons, accompanied by a feature story about the event,were in the November issue of Livewire, publication of Trico which serves two of the three Papago reservations. ft ft ft Coming dates for distribution of surplus foods include Sells, Dec. 12,° and Covered Wells, Santa Rosa, Ventana, Vaya Chin, Hickiwan, Charco 27, and San Simon, Dec. 23. Distribution dates for Chui Chu, San Xavier, and Santa Rosa Ranch will be made known later to the communi ties involved. Baskets will be bought at Santa Rosa on Dec. 19 rather than on Dec. 23. ft ft ft Joanne Antone, Laura Augustine, Emma Ignacio, Patricia Miguel, and Molly Romero were among the Sells Indian hospital patients who participated in the Nov. 20 arts-and-crafts sessions. Minnie Mackett, Lolita Manuel, and Katherine Patricio were the Sells Hospital Auxiliary mem bers assisting the Sells Hospital Service Women from Tucson.
