seems that an officer in one of the Tennessee compa
nies, a very shy young man, brought letters with him when his regiment came to the coast, and presented himself one evening at the (let us say) Van Ness Ave nue residence. As he was the son of a well-known public man and a member of an old family, his host ess exerted herself to entertain him. "We should be glad to have the pleasure of your company Friday at dinner," she said as he was leaving; "the Ha waiian commissioners are to be with us." Friday came and the commission. Shortly before the hour for dinner the butler excitedly entered the room. " They's a regiment o' soldiers, mum, outside." "No doubt in honor of the commissioners; I will tell them." Just then the lieutenant was announced. "When you are ready," he said, " I will have the men march to their places in formation." "W T hy," said the lady, "what men?" "It's my company," was the reply, "all but ten, and they're very sorry, but they couldn't come." — Argonaut. =========== Itsust BOverttee tbe Grutb. The fake advertiser has a hard time of it in Ger many. Recently a Hamburger advertised an " infal lible grease eraser." Nine of his competitors lodged a joint complaint against him for "unfair competi tion " on the ground that his eraser was not infal lible. The judge appointed an expert to make grease stains on garments and other fabrics, and then or dered the defendant to remove these stains in court with his eraser. The eraser proved lamentably un equal to the task, and the defendant was fined 100 marks ($25) and costs. He has now altered his ad vertisements. The German judges are down upon sham sales. A man who had falsely advertised he was selling out upon retiring from business was fined 300 marks ($75). Others have been fined for falsely advertising "sale after stock-taking" and "sale on account of removal." At the Leipzig exhibition of 1897 a firm showed what purported to be a model of their factory, including a building described as their "carpet weaving mill." They were fined hea vily and an injunction was granted against them re straining them from referring to the imaginary " mill." — Newspaperdom. ■ The Berliner-Boersen Courier relates what Prince Bismarck thought of conversion. When some years ago Dr. Cahn was to be proclaimed " Legationsrath " in the German foreign office, several people suggested to him to turn Christian. However, Dr. Cahn re mained brave and did not follow these suggestions. When afterwards Prince Bismarck informed him of his promotion as " Legationsrath " he congratulated him in the following words: "We have seen already that you are a brave man; you did not sell your faith."
