California's Greatest Healer

California Crops.
San Francisco. . The Department
of Agriculture has prepared the fol
lowing summary showing the weather
and crop conditions existing In Cali
fornia during the past week:
The temperature has continued
slightly above normal for the week and
no serious frosts have occurred; the
frosts on the 28th, 29th and 30th of
March were quite heavy In some sec
tions, slightly injuring grape vines in
exposed places, and. thinning out fruit
in some orchards. Rain commenced
falling Sunday morning, and was quite
general north of Tehachepi during
Sunday and Monday. ,
In the central and northern portions
of the State conditions have continued
favorable for the growth of grain and
hay, as well as for the development of
deciduous fruits.
The drought continues throughout
Southern California, and it is generally
believed that the grain crop will be a
failure, or at best but a very small
yield, and this only in favored locali
ties. Hay is also suffering from
drought and will be very light except
on irrigated lands. In nearly all sec
tions north of the Tehachepi, grain
continues thrifty and was greatly
benefited by recent rains. With favor
able conditions up to harvest time, the
yield of wheat, oats and barley should
equal or exceed the crop of any pre
vious season. Hay is also In excellent
condition and will probably yield
heavily.
Deciduous fruits are making favora
ble progress in, all parts of the State,
and the yield will be much above aver
age if normal conditions prevail. The
season has been remarkably free from
severe frosts and destructive winds,
and the moisture in the ground has
been generally sufficient to give the
trees more than usual vitality. A few
prune trees have been injured by sour
sap. Almonds are' still reported as
dropping quite heavily in some locali
ties, but it is believed the yield will
be nearly average. Citrus-fruit pros
pects continue good.
Special reports received from many
stations in the snow districts show that
the amount of snow in the mountains
is considerably less than the average.

the disaster at Reddersburg has been
allowed to come through, except the
dispatch of Lord Roberts. It is there
fore impossible to form any notion as
to what has happened. Meanwhile
the British public is beginning to real

and is reviving premature ideas with
respect to the time when the war will
be over. No one believes now that it
will have ended by the beginning of
June.
The latest disaster more particularly
illustrates the heavy task involved in
helding the railway. This body of
some five hundred British troops,
without guns, which disappeared so
completely within thirty-five miles of
the great British army, had for its
business to guard a section of nearly
ninety miles of railway between
Bloemfontein and Springfc-ntein. If it
could thus be spiriten away, how is

Lord- Roberts to Insure his continually
extending communications?
Other pertinent questions are being
asked of the successive "unfortunate
occurrences." The foremost is why do
not the British troops entrench? It is
argued that if this had been done, even
500 men might have held out until re
inforcements arrived. It cannot be
concealed that the utmost alarm is
beginning to be felt. It is said that
the Boers who captured the British at
Reddersburg belonged to Ollvier's com
mando. If bo, he has not retired north,
and hopes are epressed that he may
still be cut off.
It is asserted that 4000 rebels sur
rendered during Gen. Clement's north
ward march. The Boers will do their
utmost to hold Ladybrand and Thaban
chu, both being rich grain-producing
districts. It is said that most of the
prisoners captured at Boshof are for
eigners. "

Stockton. The Republican League
Club of1 Stockton elected twenty-one
delegates to the Republican League
Club convention to be held in Los
Angeles on the 27th inst. The club
also started a movement to invite
President McKinley to visit this city
when on the coast this fall.

county has just received a letter from
the entomologist of Cape Town, which
is one of absorbing interest,
inasmuch as the black scale
costs the orange orchardist more than
all the other pests, perhaps, In the
efforts for its extermination. Secre
tary of Agriculture Wilson has taken
a personal interest in securing a large
colony of the South African parasites,
and all that can be secured by syste
matic search will be sent to Entomol-
