San Francisco. . The Department of Agriculture has prepared the fol lowing summary showing the weather and crop conditions existing In Cali fornia during the past week: The temperature has continued slightly above normal for the week and no serious frosts have occurred; the frosts on the 28th, 29th and 30th of March were quite heavy In some sec tions, slightly injuring grape vines in exposed places, and. thinning out fruit in some orchards. Rain commenced falling Sunday morning, and was quite general north of Tehachepi during Sunday and Monday. , In the central and northern portions of the State conditions have continued favorable for the growth of grain and hay, as well as for the development of deciduous fruits. The drought continues throughout Southern California, and it is generally believed that the grain crop will be a failure, or at best but a very small yield, and this only in favored locali ties. Hay is also suffering from drought and will be very light except on irrigated lands. In nearly all sec tions north of the Tehachepi, grain continues thrifty and was greatly benefited by recent rains. With favor able conditions up to harvest time, the yield of wheat, oats and barley should equal or exceed the crop of any pre vious season. Hay is also In excellent condition and will probably yield heavily. Deciduous fruits are making favora ble progress in, all parts of the State, and the yield will be much above aver age if normal conditions prevail. The season has been remarkably free from severe frosts and destructive winds, and the moisture in the ground has been generally sufficient to give the trees more than usual vitality. A few prune trees have been injured by sour sap. Almonds are' still reported as dropping quite heavily in some locali ties, but it is believed the yield will be nearly average. Citrus-fruit pros pects continue good. Special reports received from many stations in the snow districts show that the amount of snow in the mountains is considerably less than the average. PROF. C. PERUNA PROTECTS OUR HOMES. The Koberts Family, of Falls ty, Neb Are Bealtíy and fiappyA Bare Sight in These "We Think Peruna is The Greatest Medicine On Earth." - They Say, London. Not a word regarding the disaster at Reddersburg has been allowed to come through, except the dispatch of Lord Roberts. It is there fore impossible to form any notion as to what has happened. Meanwhile the British public is beginning to real ize the immense difficulties to be over come, even before Pretoria is reached, and is reviving premature ideas with respect to the time when the war will be over. No one believes now that it will have ended by the beginning of June. The latest disaster more particularly illustrates the heavy task involved in helding the railway. This body of some five hundred British troops, without guns, which disappeared so completely within thirty-five miles of the great British army, had for its business to guard a section of nearly ninety miles of railway between Bloemfontein and Springfc-ntein. If it could thus be spiriten away, how is No man is better known iff the State of Nebraska than Mr. Carl T. Roberts, contractor and mason. A typical Amer ican active, shrewd, and full of busi ness sagacity. He is not only a uro vider for his family, but a protector. In a recent letter to Dr. Hartman he writes, among other things, as follows: "Our boy, James, had the membran ous croup, and repeated attacks of lung fever. Our boy, Charlie, was also subject to attacks of pneumonia and pleurisy. Our third boy, John, was subject to fever and ague (malarial) and liver trouble. Your remedy, Pe runa, cured my boys entirely, and now I have three of the healthiest boys in the State of Nebraska, which I attri bue to your medicine. My wife had a stomach trouble which Peruna also cured. Altogether for my whole fam ily we have used nineteen bottles of Peruna, and have thus saved $500 in doctors' bills. I am a contractor and mason by trade, and am known all over Nebraska. I have had a stomach trouble which has been greatly re lieved by your remedy, Peruna, for which I am still taking it. We think it is the greatest medicine on earth." C. T. ROBERTS, Falls City, Nebraska. 4 ".H Hon. William Youngblood, Auditor for the Interior, writes from Washington, D. C, to Dr. Hart man, Columbus, Ohio, as follows : 'I've often heard of yonr great medicine and have persuaded my wife, who has been much of a sufferer from catarrh, to try Peruna, and after using one bottle she has wonderfully im proved. It has 21 Mi Hon. William Youngblood. proved all you have claimed for it, and I take pleasure in recommending ic to any one who is afflicted with catarrh." Pemiia has become, in a multitude of households, absolutely indispensible. Mr. T. G. Walker, Carneiro, Kansas, writes: "It is with pleasure that I re port that I am better than I have been for many years. I believe Peruna is without a doubt the best medicine that ever was used in a family. It has cured my nervousness, with which 1 had been afflicted for a great number of years." It is a fact of ever-increasins aston ishment that so many otherwise sensi ble and provident people, will, for the neglect of so simple a precaution as to have a bottle of Peruna at hand, bring themselves the needless suffering and foolish expense that a practitioner of medicine is forced to witness every day. As soon as the value of Peruna i3 fully appreciated by every household, both as a preventive and cure of these affections, tens of thousand of lives will be saved, and hundreds of tho -ands of chronic, lingering sases of d! ease prevented. Peruna is the house hold safe guard. A complete work on chronic catarrh sent free to any address by The P -runa Medicine Company, Columbus, Ohio. Lord- Roberts to Insure his continually extending communications? Other pertinent questions are being asked of the successive "unfortunate occurrences." The foremost is why do not the British troops entrench? It is argued that if this had been done, even 500 men might have held out until re inforcements arrived. It cannot be concealed that the utmost alarm is beginning to be felt. It is said that the Boers who captured the British at Reddersburg belonged to Ollvier's com mando. If bo, he has not retired north, and hopes are epressed that he may still be cut off. It is asserted that 4000 rebels sur rendered during Gen. Clement's north ward march. The Boers will do their utmost to hold Ladybrand and Thaban chu, both being rich grain-producing districts. It is said that most of the prisoners captured at Boshof are for eigners. Alabastine is the original and only durable wall coating on the market. It is entirely different from all kalso mine preparations. Alabastine is made ready for use in white or fourteen beautiful tints by the addition of cold water. It is put up in dry powdered form, in packages, properly labeled, with full directions on every package. It takes the place of scaling kalso mines, wall paper, and paint for walls. Alabastine can be used on plaste, brick, wood or canvas, and a child can brush it on. What "Kalsomines" Are. Kalsomines are cheap and temporary preparations, manufactured from whit ing, chalks, clays, etc. They are stuck on the walls with decaying animal glue. AlaDastine is not a kalsomine. It is a rock-base cement, which sets, and it hardens with age. It can be re coated and re-decorated without hav ing to wash and scrape off Its old coats. Alabastine is utilized to a great extent in hospitals, as it prevents the accumulation of dirt and the congre gating of disease germs, being disin fectant in its nature. Churches and Schoolhouses. The interor walls of churches, school houses and all public halls should never be coated with anything but the durable ana pure Alabastine. So evi dent has this j.act become, that hun dreds of tons are used annually for ihis work. The genuine Alabastine does not rub or scale off. It is cleanly during the long period of Its useful ness. Every owner of a building should use it. Ask your paint dealer or drug gist for card of tints, and write for free copy of our interesting booklet to Alabastine Co., Grand Rapids, Mich. Reject the "Just as Good." The dealer who tells you that he can sell you the "same thing" as Alabas tine or "something just as good," either is not posted or is trying to de ceive you. In offering something he has bought cheap and is trying to sell or Alabastine's demands, he may not realize the danger to himself as well as to you. Beware of all new substi tutes. Dealers risk a suit for dam ages by selling and consumers by us ing an Infringement. Alabastine Co. own the right to make and sell wall coatings adapted to mix with cold water.
