LA-Ca TKe Holbrook Args, VOL X. HOLBROOft. ARIZONA SATURDAY, APRIL 15. 1905. No. 15. Officers Kill One And Capture The Other Both Put Up A Scrap. - On the morning of the 7th Sher iff Houck received a telegram from Winslow stating that the Wigwam saloon had been held up by two masked men about 2 o'clock that morning, and he boarded No. 1 for the scene of the holdup. To him we are indebt ed for the following details of the holdup and the capture of the robbers. At about 1:30 a. m. John Kel ley, night bartender in the Wig wam asked Night Marshall Ket chum to watch out for him while he stepped out to get something to eat, while Kelley was out two masked men stepped in the front door, one of them threw down on Ketchum and the other one went over to the roulette wheel and began raking the bank oc silver, which contained between 250 and $300, into a tin buck et which they had brought with them. This finished they step out and disappeared. People in the saloon at first thought it a joke, but when the men disappeared with the 'dough' they realized it was the real thing, a hold up, then sizing up the situation and taking into consideration that the robbers did not go into the cash register, or take the bank roll on the crap table they came to the conclus ion they were green hands and had weakened before completing their job. When Houck arrived in Wins low Ketchum informed him Pete Pemberton had gone to Flagstaff on the lookout for them and ad vised him to go there also, which he did. In Flagstaff he met Pete who said he hadn't any trace of them and was going to return to Winslow on the local. Houck decided to accompany him, when the local arrived at Sunshine and had a few minutes work to do Houck started over to the quar ry to ask if any strangers had been there when the head brake man told him he saw two men between there and Canyon Diab lo and they hid in the bushes as the train came up, as this looked suspicious he and Pete walked back to Canyon Diablo and there met two men on the track, opposite Volt's store, they had a chat with them and both put up a very straight forward story, but Houck said, "well, we'll just search you and then wont have to bother you any more," he reached over and took hold of the fellows coat, he reached for his gun and said, "No you can't search me," Houck covered him, but he pulled his gun and fired, the bullet passing through Chet's coat, Houck returned the fire, in the meantime Pete and the other gent had gotten into act ion and were doing some lively shooting, Houck and his man kept busy until they got on op posite sides of a house they ran to the other end and Houck ord ered him to throw up, he preten- ded he would but was trying to get another shot, Houck saw his game and shot hitting him in the temple, Pete hallooed, "that's a beauty, come back and get this one my gun's gone dry," Houck hurried over and the robber was walking off, he threw down on him and commanded him to throw up, but the fellow just looked over his shoulder and went on Houck pulled the trig ger and found out he had emp tied his gun, he then turned back and met Pete who had gotten a shotgun which he took and, star ted back, the man sat down and carefully v placed his gun beside him, when Houck got about 50 yards from him he asked, "are you going to give up or will I have to kill you too," he replied, "man I'm shot, I'm all in," Chet said, "come here," he replied, "I tell- you I'm shot and can't," Houck said, "throw that gun away." he repeated, "I tell you I'm shot and can't." Houck then said, "get away from that gun or I will kill you," the rob ber walked over a few feet and sat down. "He had put two car tridges in his gun and had it full cock. Pete had hit him three times, all flesh wounds, he will recover The dead robber was hit four times; the coroner's jury exhonorated Houck. The captured robber said they saw the officers coming and de dided Pete wouldn't fight and it would be easy for them to dis arm or it necssary kill Houck; he can see where they were mistak en. He gives the following nam es dead man, John Shaw; his as W. Smith; he says they were la boring men and this was his first venture in the holdup biz. The officers think they are old timers, if this was their first venture they were very apt scholars. Pete got off with a shot through left shoulder of his coat. Zack Booth flust Hang. The Supreme Court at Phoenix has sustained the district court at Globe in the case of Zack Booth who was sentenced last summer to hang for the killing of Wilev Berrv. T. Sweeping Order is Issued Against Federation of Miners Kingman, April 8. A sweep ing injunction was granted the German American Mining Com pany at this term ol the district court by Judge Sloan. By its terms miners are prohib ited from going upon the premis es of or picketing against the plaintiff company, or intimidat ing, speaking to or attempting to keep workmen from entering or remaining in the employ of the company. Patronize Home Merchants. The editor of the Gallup Repub lican writes as follows regarding the sending away for goods that could be bought at home: "We hear business men com plaining that things don't move quick right now. There is a kind of depression in business. "We suppose that the weather has something to do with it. There is still another reason. The mail order business is killing this town. Everyone sends east or west for goods. They save a few cents by it. Merchants complain bitterly about the matter; But the worst of it is (shall we let the cat out of the bag why not! still let it be a secret among our selves,) why, the very merchants do thf same. The goods they don'. .; which are needed lor their own use, they order out of town. Now, do these merchants deserve the support of the com munity? Do they have a right to complain? Is that public spirit? We could give names. We are afraid, though that the list would be too long." New Appoin' Uc.li. Governor Kibbc i.as appoint .. vVesle A.
