" 'Yes,' said I, 'what of it?' "'Mr. Adair, the detective?' he hiccoughed. " 'Yes, yes. Who are you?' I asked impatiently. " 'Mr. Adair,' said the untidy wretch, as he laid his hand on my shoulder to keep himself from falling. 'I'll tell you who I am, Mr. Adair. I'm hie the husband of your washerwoman.' ".'Well, what of that?' said I. "My scorn brought a sneer to the man's Hps, and he paid: " 'You see, you don't know every thing, Mr. Adair.' Ancient House Gift of English States man to Edinburgh, The earl of Rosebery, who is a de scendant of the Viscountess Primrose, has prevented to the city of Edinburgh the ancient, historic and quaintly built I.ady Stair's house, to be ussd for a municipal museum. When Lady Prim rosa became a widow, Lord Stair forced her to u'arry him by the same bold strategy that made him a field marshal. Slipping into her house, he showed himself in deshabille at b,er bedroom windows. All Edinburgh rang with the scandal, and to end it Lady Primrose became the Countess of Stair. The house, is situated in the Lawnmarket, once very fashionable, but now corresponding to our east Broadway. It has been completely re stored by Lord Rosebery, and Us curi ous inner stairway and oddly shaped rcoms are intact. San Francisco Argonaut. On his death bed he bussed his menus not to arrange a funeral for him, as he had left his body by will to the Paris School of Medicine. The Organ Grinder. I love all kinds of music except the tom-tom of Carbadc3 and the ragtime In minor of the Chinese. An up-to-date hand-organ in front of my door, If the crank Is turned wtth discretion, always gets a few cents out of my pocket by way of encouragement. . I am not like Mascagni, who, upon hear ing a fellow In the street murdering "Cavalleria Rusticana," rushed down in Italian frenzy, cursed him out In pure Milanese, and, grasping the handle, proceeded to Bhow Pletro,.hIs namesake, how to grind out his grand composition with a Campanlnl Inter pretation. Next day the same organ was In front of his door, bearing a big placard "Pupil of MaScagni." New York Press. ., Utilizing Water Courses. Louis Klein of Madison may have a beagle dog that is a Ra.T.es, but Fred Price's canine friend is a bread winner of distinct class, according to the In dianapolis Star. His dog went home the other day with a pocketbook full of money. This knowing animal followed a good woman of the city into a grocery, and when she laid her purse on the counter a ruoir.ent Price's water spaniel seized it and was off for bis mr.s'.er. "See what I have brought you," he seemed to say as he washed his tail and looked up for appreciation in his effort. And he wondered sorrowfully why his master was so anxious to re turn the prize instead of burying it out In the back yard along with the choice bones Mr. Price thinks the next thing will be his spaniel dog coming home with a child It has seized for ransom. Anticipating Misfortune. Not only do we suITer much in the anticipation of evil, as "Noah lived many years under the affliction of a flood, and Jerusalem was uken unto Jeremy before it was besieged," but we often distress ourselves greatly In the apprehension of misfortunes which', alter all, never happen at all. We should do our best and wait calm ly the result. We often hear of peo ple breaking down from overwork, but In nine cases out of ten they are real ly suffering from worry and anxiety. A Parisian Character. The revolutionary Libertad has died In a Paris hospital from a kick which he had received during a stormy meeting recently. Two large and powerful reflectors are placed over a deep receptacle and a powerful exhaust fan. The beams of light are thrown on the distant moun tain sides, and it is said that three tons of moths were caught the first night. Natural Vagrants, All of Us, There has never been a time when men did not wander from a desire for change, a desire to flee from the mo notony of mere existence. There is a fever in the blood which drives men to wander, affecting rich and poor alike, and this is a factor which no legislation can ever entirely eliminate In dealing with the true vagrant class.
