Woods. Mrs. Van j Laningham came by the way of j Dallas and Terrell, Texas, where ! she has a daughter teaching elo cution in the schools. After a few days here she and Mrs. Woods expect to make a visit to " the old folks who have been mak ing their home in Phoenix for the past 3-ear. j Miss Pearl Noble passed thru I Holbrook Saturday morning on Ter wav to her old home in ; lpine. Apache county, having been called from Provo bv the sci ions illness of her mother. Miss Noble has spent the last three years teaching in the Provo schools. Mr James Porter came in dur ing the week from Navajo on business connected with his large j sheep interests in that section of ' Arizona. We have been having some pretty eoH weather for this time of the year. It is feared that the frosty nights ha ve greatly injured the fruit in both Woodruff and Joseph City. On the night of April 30th, icicles an inch thick formed on the bottoms of water tanks. Mrs. James Scorse and sister, Miss Eliza Mann, left Monday evening on a combined business and pleasure trip to their former home in Chester. Illinois. They both expect to be a way for about two months. Mrs. Lomas of I,:i Junta was a Holbrook visitor during the week. She was here to see her old friend. Mrs. C. II. Brownell. Miss Rosy Scores has been quite sick for a few days but is much better at the present writing- Mr. and Mrs. Browuell ind Mr. and Mrs. Teeple were out for a short ride Sunday evening. Mr Cox and Mr. Bruce, timber experts for the government, who have been over the proposed route for the new railroad to be built to Ft. Apache, returned Saturday on their way to Wash ington to consult with the secre tary of the interior. These two gentlemen were surprised at the amount of mature timber in the southern part of this county and say they will make a most favor able report to the government officials and give every encour agement to the promoters of the new road. They have assured the people here that the govern ment intends to aid in main ways the development of the northern part of Arizona. It is now believed that the road will be well on its way to completion before the end of the year. Ouite a number of the young people of Holbrook attended the dance given at Ad.imana a few nights ago. The dancers returned the following morning rather tired but reporting a most en jovable time. Mr. L. P. Shryer was in from the Puerco during the week visiting Iriends. Last Friday word was received from Silver Creek that the four teen year old daughter of Felici ano Mori had been accidentally shot and seriously injured. Doc tor Brown left at (mee for the scene of the accident. It seems that the little girl had been hand ling a 22 pistol and let it drop. The bullet passed through the fleshy part of the thumb of the left hand and struck her in the lower part of the abdomen, in flicting what is most likely to prove a serious wound. Symp toms of the most alarming kind have set in and the doctor ex presses put litttle hope of her re covery. The unfortunate child as well as her parents have the sympathy of a large number of friends. Mr. Louie Ghuey has been busy of late getting his home in repair for the reception of his wife and little daughter who are expected home from New Mexico in a day or two. During the past week Sheriff Woods has been as busy as a one-armed man fighting off a swarm of bees. One call and then another has kept him going all the time. A. & B.
