STOCK 2T0TES.
The Elko (Nov.') Independent!
says "gentle spring" Las arrived.
The cattle inspectors have been
doing good work through Colorado
this winter.
Golprado papers say that winter
:has broken and cattle are loosing
.remarkably well.
Buyers of young cattle are swar
ming in Utah and that grade are
bringing excellent prices.
The Hand Spring Ranch and
stock, near Las -Animas, Col., has
been sold by P. G-. Scott for $25,
" 000.
The spring round-up will com
mence in Idaho about the first of
April. So says the Darlington
Transporter.
Governor Pierce, of Dakota, will
engage in the stock business when
relieved of official duties by the
newjadministration.
The Raton Comet says that the
range cattle in northern New Mex
ico are in splendid condition, and
that the loss this year will be noth
ing to speak of.
A Colorado breeder of Herefords
claims that he has no trouble in
selling all the high grade yearling
whitefaced bulls he has to spare
this season at $125 each.
Six thousand dollars worth of
estrays have been picked up by
the Inspector of the Cherokee Strip
Live Stock Association, at Kansas
City stock yards, this season.
Nevada stock growers are ship
ping a great many fat beeves to
: San Francisco this spring. They
claim that the stock done better
. last winter than any previous one.
The Del Norte (Col.) Prospector
says the very warm weather for the
past month, has caused some alarm
among the stockmen lest the hay
fed beef, now on hand, will find no
market.
The Albuquerque Journal says
that there has been 11,000 head of
cattle put on tne range in Bernalil
lo county within the last sixty
days, and that the new grass is
coming very fast.
The Montana Stock Growers As
sociation have emploTed a veterin
ary surgeon to be stationed with
headquarters, at Glendive. He will
look after their interests and quar
antine djseased cattle, etc.
Tlie Texas Stockman says that
there will be a demand northwest,
. for 250,000 young steers to restock
the ranges that have been to a great
extent depleted by losses, and by
beef shinements. With trail and
rail closed against Texas, where are
they to come from.
From the Silver City (N. M.)
Sentinel we learn that at the recent
sale there, of blooded stock, by
Leonard Bros., that John Brock
man paid $5,000 for six bulls and
one Galloway cow. A. E. Head al
so purchased a carload of cross
bred Galloway and Shorthorn bulls.
Dodge City, Ks. Cowboy : The
weather during the past two weeks
has been warm and summer-like.
Under its influence cattle are recu
perating with wonderful rapidity.
The winter losses were much less
than was supposed by many. Cat
' tlemen are by no means discourag"
ed.
It is rumored that a contract has
, been made with the Chicago firm of
P. D. Armour & Co., by the British
government, for the supply of its
troops now on duty in the Soudan,
with. 5,000,000 cans of fresh and
corned beef. This will take about
70,000 head of cattle and make an
appreciable difference in our mar
ket quotations.
The bull season is at hand and
stockmen should remember that it
is a short sighted polic' to stint
the supply of bulls on the ranged
Calves cannot be had without bulls.
The better the cows are served the
greater the percent, of calves. That
supplying bulls for a large range is
quite a tax we are aware, but is it
not better for cattle owners to
spend a little more in this direction
and get an increased per cent, of
calves, than to cut down the bull
account and gather but half a crop
of calves? . -
