7 One of the grave complaints
made by the son of John Taylor,
in the interview reported from
Philadelphia, is that a journal in
Salt Lake had charged that the
masses of the Mormons, were ig
norant people. The statement is
only partially true. Doubtless
Taylor meant the Tribune. The ex
tent of the offense is that this jour
nal has made the charge often that
the great mass of Ihe'Mormon
people is composed of ignorant
foreigners and their children. Will
young Taylor dispute this propo
sition? " He certainly cannot. His
own father, the President of the
church, is', far from being an igno
rant man, but he is an infinite dis
tance from the place of a finished
scholar." And when it comes to
that, there has never been any
thins like a finished scholar at
tached to the Mormon church.
Not one. Orson Pratt was proba
bly the m-)Sfc cultivated man who
ever belonged to the church, but
when liis scholarship is analyzed
it will not bear the test in any par
ticular.
Not only have the Mormons
been conspicuously (not to say re
diculouslv) lacking in men of ed
ucation and culture, but in their
own chosen specialty of theology,
they have been outrageously crude
and indecent. From men claim
ing to be in daily communication
with God, and therefore supposably
on the highest and most refined
plane of thought, never came there
0 complete and disgusting a mass
of -cruel and wrong-headed rub

this field have been abo.ut of an or
der of idealty that might have
ibeen expected from the vicious and
.consienceless fsatrages of Ashantee
or. Bakoanjr ' grafted on the robust
blasphemv of Wabash flatboat
men. Their idea of the Deity is
:grossly vulgar and sensual. Their
?notion of spirits as wholly sala
cious, and their main theory on
that subject is calculated solely to
spur men on to greater efforts in
procreation. Their astronomico
bestial theory of heaven (Kolob)
is a degree more depraTeTt"Tliatr
-was ever dreamt of in Moham
med's vagaries. Their formula oi
vquorumsof Gods" is a polythe
ism jnore absurd and recklessly
unmeaning and blasphemous than
any other form of paganism thai
ever prevailed among men. Theii
persistent aid fiendishly ingenious
theories, formulated for the soli
purpose of exacting men and de
grading women, have no parallel
even among the lowest and most
depraved savages; for these have
never held anv theory more crue1
for their mothers, wifes and daugh
ters than total annihilation ; where
as tho Mormon creed consigns
them to everlasting future torment
unless ('in the llesh" they beconn
mere slaves to lechery and brutal
bedevilment of all kinds that iaa
please any conscienceless scoun
drel who has them in his toils .
