The new jail is rapidly approaching completion, and the contractoissay that before the end of the present month it will be ready for occupancy. If Milner had his just dues he would be its first inmate. The San Felipe hotel, at Albuquerque, caught fire beneath the large cooking range, on Monday last, and for awhile fears were entertained for the safety of that beautiful building. As Mountain-Meadow-Massacre-Mil-ncr is so interested in regard to the completion of buildings in St. Johns, we would like this polygamous saint to inform us when the Mormon tithing house and grist mill will be finished. E Bon sail, is main taining its popularity and patronage. There is no house for the entertainment of the traveling public in the southwest that offers a cleaner and purer rest for the comfort of its guests. Frank Lewis has added greatly to the appearance of his confectionary store by the addition of a neat poreh in front, a mansard roof on top, and fresco and tissue paper decorations upon the in side. A, B. Lambsort and son are re sponsible for the exterior, and Prof. William Bender Hubbell, for the in terior improvements. The Albuquerque Democrat of Aug ust 1st, is responsible for the following : "There is no use to disguise the matter any longer ; the disease which has been proving so fatal at the Needles, is pro nounced Asiatic cholera. A post mor tem was made on a victim a few days since, and three physicians pronounced the disease cholera of the most violent type." During an altercation at Holbrook on Sunday last between a railroad brake- j man and a cow boy in the employ of the Aztec Cattle Company, the former received injuries which were thought would prove fatal, but he has since Bo far recoved as to be able to resume his duties on the road. "Monkey" ye not with the festive cow boy, or y'otlr dajs will be short atid full of trouble: Grasshoppers have made their ap pearance in great numbers in several localities in this vicinity. They have descended upon the Meadows and with few exceptions destroyed the entire crops of that community-wheat and barley being too far advanced to receive much injury from the orthopterous in sects the ranch of Mr. A. B. Lamb son being entirely devastated by their visitation. The oil used by the Mormons to an- noint their converts and also those mar ried in the endowment houses, is ob tained from the Gila monster. It is es sential for these religious ceremonies that the animal be caught by some bishop or elder of the church, and try- ed out in vats made for that purpose Bishop Milner, who edits the Orion Era, it is said, was formerly a Gila monster catcher. We understand that owing to the in crease of freight rates recently made by the Atlantic & Pacific railroad, sev eral of our merchants are making ar rangements to freight their merchan diseby teams from some point on the Santa Fe railroad, probably Los Lunas. It is claime.d that by tliis arrangement goods can be delivered at St. Johns cheaper than they can be transported over the Atlantic & Pacific road from Albuquerque to Navajo, and from the latter point by wagon road to this place. William Robbins returned from the Navajo country on Saturday. He says that there are quite a number of Amer icans on the reservation purchasing ponies from the Indians, which they are driving to the railroad, from which point they are shipped by the car-load to northern and southern New Mexico to be used on the several large ranches in that territory. The animals are larger, better stock, and it is said make better cow horses than the average Mexican pony. The prices paid for them range from $25 to $50. A correspondent in the Orion Era complains because that paper contains so little local news, which is clearly de monstrated from the following items, being the entire local news contained in the last issue of that paper, the re mainder of the sheet being filled with jim-crow editorials, bald-headed clip pings and stereotyped patent medicine puffs : "Messrs. Barth, Ruiz, Stover, Kenncar and Sherwood have returned from Prescott. Messrs. Dunning & Tee of the Board of Super visors are expected to return to day. The case of tlio l S. Vs. Joseph Crosby was still on trial at tne time of our latest information The ease of the Territory Vs. Sol ll.irth, is laid over until tne v. h. business is disposed of. MR. BARTH'S OPINION OF ARI ZONA AND NEW MEXICO. Jacob Barth, the veteran merchant, is back from Arizona and New Mexico, where he spent several weeks visiting friends and looking over the country. He says that that region is not nearly so bad as it is pictured, that every other man does not shoot on the slightest provocation, and that the opportunities for making money are almost boundless In the latt er respect t he country presents the same attraction for young men that Grand Rapids did fifteen or twenty years ago, and a few years' residence at most any one of the railway towns, coupled with ordinary sagacity, is suffic ient to accumulate a respectable for tune. There is no foolishness in trade there goods arc bought for the pur pose of making good margins, and such things as "leaders" aro unknown. The main trade is with the stockmen and natives. In the case of the former, credits are extended from shearing to shearing that is from April to Septem ber and from September to April, it be ing the custom to shear twice a year- while in the latter case the merchant extends credit until the farmer disposes of his grain to the government, which is almost his only customer. The main industry of the region is, of course, cat tle raising, and men talk of cattle and cattle ranges as we talk of mills and tracts of pine. The cattle find a mar ket in California and at Kansas City and other eastern points, and the wool is sold at the railway towns at an aver age price of eight cents per pound. The farming is all done on the river bottoms where irrigation is possible, the irri gation being mostry carried on by means of canals conducted on the co-operative plan.
