ICOXCLCDED.] M.OR was I mlstakeu. In a few minutes * they swept rouud together, His aim en. 'i circling me waist which mine Had so - lately clashed, and holding tier closer to htm than 1 had daied to do. The sight, ordinary as it was, filled me Willi liny; hut still I stood there walling till they should come round again. II was an act of lolly on my part thus to torture ' myself by a sight which I could so easily have avoided, but I was Incapable of resisting the temptation to wituess. And how they danced! If Elinor Ayton was the best female waltzer in the room, she had at least a partner worthy ol her skill; 1 was forced to admit that. At last the wtilizcame to an end, and the dancers proceeded to promenade ihe room. Miss Ayton passed me more than once leaning on the aim of her partner. They were dialling together very gayly and laughing now and then; I felt sure the subject of their men intent was my recent clumsiness. Never once did she turn her eyes towaid inc. though she knew 1 most be standing there with feelings of annoyance and •self-reproach. Purely, I thought, she might have lal en 111* earliest opportunity lo leave that fellow and console me In my vexation, but she did not. Nay, mote— when the orchestra hud itiuck up again lor a square dance, 1 perceived that she still had Captain Curtis beside her as ber partner. Was the petly service lie had ren dered so gieat as to call for such a reward as tin- I .' 1 could bear the sight of their association no longer and him led fiom ihe ball-room. 1 had Intended to leave tlie house, but ibe corudoi thiough which I happened lo pass led me, not to tie front, but to Ibe back of the mansion, and in aft w moments, having put aside the heavy vel vet curtain that hung acioss an open French window, I found tuysell upon the broad I err ace Which looked ihe beautiful garden-"! hi the rear of Linton Hall. * ; It was ihe height of summer and a cool, re fie-liii.g hie . .' was blowing. The noon was al most lull, and, while visible, dimly lighted up the landscape; but vow and then scudding clouds uassed ovei its surface and shrouded the scene in dai Kiit---. 1 paced to and fro upon the terrace. The ' active motion and the breeze alike refreshed me. But my mind was still tortured by auger and Jealousy, True, I could not iblult for a mo mem lhat the tiling accident 1 had caused would lower me in the opinion ol ihe woman 1 lovid, nor could 1 attach any Importance io her acceptance of Allen Curtis' hand In a dance. It was something loie tbau either of lues circum stances thai oi pressed my heart, Trivial themselves, tli j were significant. They sttg geiied llie bitter truth that of the two men mho bad loved her Allen ( (litis, and not 1. was Ihe one test suited Io her as a partner, hot merely In a dauce, hut for life. How ci.ti id I think otherwise? I might have my merits, no doubt 1 knew thai, if Elinor Ay ion were mine, 1 should lavish upon her a wealth of alleciion sucli as lew women uid command. If ever a man was ads led lo be a woman's slave it was I. lib a tickle, frivolous or unioa tonal le woman It Is possible 1 might in time be at a vail. itii'i', but never wttb one like Elinor. I knew that she had a doling and indulgent father, aod .was aware that she never for one moineut too* undue advantage of his kindness. She was not highly educated, hut she was Intelligent and ap preclatlve, and had perfect taste iv all matters uf art. To such a woman 1 could devote my whole life, and sin- could uot but love me for sucb love a- 1 '.id to give. . Yet was it a manlike myself thai such a woman would choose? She was the peilecliuu of sweet ness and grace, but what was 1? Unsightly in appearance, awkward in manner. Hide in Cecil. I was about as uitte active as a man could he. Oh, tbat my soul, my mind, weie In Alien Cm Us' body ' 1 disliked liim because 1 knew he loved the woman I worshiped. lie was good looking, polished, agieeahle aud conciliatory In maimer— a very much more likely person to he admired, perhaps loved, by Elinor, than myself. 1 had seen her just now clasped to his breast. That was nothing. But 1 could picture to myself tue scene lv which lie should be bending over her whlspei ing winds and vows of affection In ber ear, expressed In dainty language which 1 could not command. Even at that very moment lie might he taking advantage of his oppoilun-ty. The thought was madness. 1 could not linger Where I stood, uot knowing what might be hap peulng lv the crowded ball-room, where my fate for Hie might be sealed beyond hope. 1 must re tuiu and watch them— see whether my suspi cious were well founded or not— peihai s have a . word with liei ■ which might pi event, or at least avert, the event 1 feared. With hasty steps 1 crossed the terrace and rushed lo the French wiudow which give access to the liouse. 1 parted the velvet curtain that burg across it, and at tiiat mon. tut sustained a violent physical shock. i had accidentally come lv contact with the body of some other man. We had now crossed the terrace and had reached the side where li was hindered by a balustrade. beneath, at the depth cl - me twenty leet, lay the ornamental garden, and access to the lower ground was gained by a long straight flight of marble steps. At that unnieni the moou Was hidden behind a cloud, and our desperate struggle was cou linued In darkness.
