DR. PARKHURST'S CHURCH.
One of the Ol.dest Pre.byterlnn Societies
la New York.
The Madison - squara Presbyterian
Church, situated on the corner of Madison
avenue find Twenty-fourth BTeet. dues
back to the year 1853. The old Pearl-street
church consolidated with the Central church
in Broome street and moved uptown. Dr.
Wood, of the former church, took charge.
and, with Dr. William Adam?, of the latter,
organized the Madison-square Presbyterian
Church. The following year ;ho pres-
cnt edifice (as shown in the above cut)
was erected and dedicated. The builtt
iug itself is honest In its construction and
its walls are of solid stone masonry.
From a few hundred the congregation has
grown until now its numbers are closo to
two thousand, while vigorous missions hav >
been sent from it to other sections of the
city. After 20 years of service in is?.* Dr.
Adams went i>ut of the active control of thia
church to accept the presidency of tin*
Union Theological Seminary, and his faro
well sermon, preached on April 19, 1874.
was an event In the history of the Presby
terian church in America. A marble tablet
to fne right of the pulpit, placed there tift; r
his death in 1880, tells a brief history of the
devoted life of Dr. Adam?.
J>r. Tucker filled the pulpit until, in 1578, I >■
went 10 Andover to mix in the turmoil and
struggle of that theological areua. In 1880
Dr. Park hurst assumed tho duties as its
pastor, fie ia a New Enclander by birth,
and is college trained, having finished UU
education In some of the universities on the
Continent, lie is a uian of marked pres
ence, and from Ills first word in the pulpit,
to the hist, he is full of wit and brilliancy,
of apothegms, of apt illustrations, of meta
phors—ail to the point— and ho is always
himself and always at his bost.
Upon the death of Dr. Howard Crosby];
Dr. Park hurst succeeded to the presidency
of the Society for the Prevention of Crime,
and in this capacity he undertook his
famous crusade against vice and corruption
last winter. It was from the pulpit of t!ii>
church that the voice of Dr. Park hurst was
first hoard in public denouncing tn'e sins
and wickedness of this grtat city. From
the foregoing it will be seen that the M idl
son-square Presbyterian Church has had an
interesting history, its ministers haying all
been noted for their honest convictions.
Dr. Parkaurst is now in Ear pa and in his
absence the services will be conducted by
the assistant pastor, Rev. C. W. Good rich,
except for three weeks In August, when
the church will bo closed for repairs.

where she will go back to Brazil.
The cruiser was built of a very hard Bra
zilian wood called peroba. To give an idea
of its hardness it is enough to say thai live
years ago the vessel went ashore in the bay
of Rio Janeiro, remaining on the rocks for
24 hours. At first it was thought she would
be very much damaged, but after she got off
It was found that her bottom was hardly
SCI itched.
The cruiser is 163 feet long and of 2010
