MARE ISLAND MATTERS. Latest News From the White Squadron. WORK ON THE MONADNOCK. Repairing the Mohican— New Boilers to Be Placed in the Albatross— Proposed Wstar Works. Correspondence of The Morn in* a Calx. Vallejo, Nov. 6.— The white squadron under command of Kear-Adtuiral Bancroft Ghorardi, U. S. N., is pushing its way south. Wherever the cruisers have called into port they were greatly admired and the officers received and entertained with distinguished courtesy. On the 24th of last month the squadron was lying in the pretty harbor of Acapulco. All on board the ships were waft!, From there the ships were to sail for San Jose, thence to Panama, being due there the latter part of the coming week. From Panama the squadron would steam down to Callao and Val pairaso, to leave there about the ISO of December for Montevideo by way of the Strait of Magellan. One night will be put in probably at the penal colony, where it is customary for ships to anchor. Persons desiring to commuuic&te witn the squadron prior to their reaching the Eastern States will have their letters delivered the qoickrst by addressing them in care of li. F. Stevens, 4 Trafalgar Square, London, England. It seems a long way round, but it is the shortest way for then) to receive mail. Most of the officers at the navy yard and ships attended the launching of the Olympia at San Francisco Saturday. Ad miral John Irwln, U. 5. N., was present with the following as his personal staff of officers: Captain C. S. Cotton, Chief En gineer J. W. Moore, Lieutenant G. W. Stoney, Lieutenant 11. E. Parmenter, Pay master J. It Stanton, Major U. A. Bnrt lett and Naval Constructor J. H. Linnard. Itear-Admiral George Brown, U. S. N., commander-in-chief of the Pacific station, with his personal staff and a number of invited guests, went down from the island on the tug Fearless, and returned after wit nessing the launch. Those having seen the Dew cruiser pronounce her a fine specimen of naval architecture. For real iighting-ships there will prob ably be nothing built that th« montor iModadnock, now being completed at the island, would have to back down from in case a test as to their respective merits were made. Were such a thing required and the ma terial ail at hand, the monitor could be gottpn ready for sea.duty in say six or seven months. The work is progressing in great shape. Tne military mast with its lop is ready for stepping, and has just received a couple of coats of paint, as lias also the superstruc ture. The bulkheads between decks with the exception of those between the engines and boilers are completed. The hull is nearly ready for the wood-backing, which should have been received long a^o. Just as soon as the contractors deliver the material it will be put in, and also the immense armor plates, which are to com« from the East. They are longoverdue. Bulkheads are being placed in the superstructure which is to be used as quarters for the oflicers. In time of action this superstructure could be shot away, and no material damage done. Its apie«rance causes the monitor to present a formidable aspect. The turrets are about ready to receive their armor. The roller paths for the turrets are ready to place in the ship, and the gear for turning the same is already in place. The engine-kelsons and boiler-saddles are in ilace to receive the engines ana boilers, which are being com pleted as fast as possible. The air-poits, deck-scuttles and many of the small fit tings are already in the ship. A great many of the fittings, such as water-tight ovOJS, r.wning and rail-^taochions, are being finished in the sht»P2. Considerable work is required to be done to thri&il the double bottom, in the way of cutting timbdf«ho)es and making ihe compartments water-tight. The steam windlass is iv position, as are al c oa number of bilge and feed pumu«. The h'-use Pipes are all cast, aod it was expected a large ventilator would arrive during last week. A large piec-e of metal-work arrived, but it proved to be sent by mistake and was intended for the Oi.vmpia. Men are bu/y in the boatshop on her boats. As soon as the ironworkers leave the inside of the monitor the woodworkers will commence. The Mohican is in tue stone dock, and if nothing prevents the work on her keel will be completed in a few day?, and she will Come out ab'>ut as good »\s new. Compara tively lit;!e damage was .lone to the ship by her s'.riking on the rock 3. A board of In quiry is ih.w in session at the yaid to learn the cause of the accident. As soon as the Mohican conies out of the dock the Thetis will go iv and have her pro peller put in. In about two weeks she will be away from here to do survey duty off the coast of Lower California and Mexico. Captain Tanner of the Albatross arrived last Thursday from the East. The ship ha 3 been hauled down under :he large crane and had her boilers hoisted out. The Te l: itan to this ship are to be made at the yard and a good Job will be done. A pair ol the boilers that were brought out here for the Monadnock, but afterward decided not to be used, are to be put in her. The boilers fur the Monadnock nre of a different make and pattern than first intended, which is the reason of the ones now to be put iv the Albatross, uot being used in the monitor. The ship will be here for a number of weeks. The men went to work half an hour earlier in the morning and q'lii half an hour earlier iv the afternoon, commencing Tues day last. A new steam-whistle has just been put iv the construction black^nnlh shop for the benefit of calling the men to go to work and quittinK.it being dunned that the bell iv the yard c*>uld not be heard, A lurge number of books of all kinds are being assorted and packed in boxes to be sent up to Port Orchard to be placed on board of the Nipsic. The chances are that Chief Encineer George J. Burnap, U. IS. X.. now in charge of the Monndnoi-k's machinery, will be de tailed to the Olytn-'ia. He is the only chief encineer on the coa9t available for this duty, aud it would not be at all surprising If before long he was assigned to this duty. '1 ho lately detniled head of the depart ment of construction and repair, Naval Con structor Darid VV. Taylor, TJ. S. X., will arrive the latter part of the present month and cssume charge. Tuesday being election day employes at the yard will be allowed sufficient time to come over to i his side and vote, though they will have their time checked against them for the time the}- are absent on this errand. Undottu'eiily but lew will woik at all on that day, that is if ths jast is any crlteriou to go by. 'lhe condemned tug Ivy is lying In the stream, alongside of the Pensac la, and already a number of prospective bidders have had an eye on her. Remember she is to le sola* to the highest bidder on the Stk of Xovfunber. An election will take place in this city to morrow, Monday, that is of great import ance to the people of the town as well as to the residents at the Xavy-yard and the vast industries connected therewith. The voters are to decide whether they are willing to incur ah indebtedness to the amount of $250, C00 lor the purpose of ac quiring lands watertight?, runts of way, and all rights and things whatsoever neces sary to construct and complete public water works for the city. The Trustees have se cured tho rights of a line stream of pure water that is as fine as can be found In the State. The water now furnished is poor and unwholesome. .The -officials at the l.< land itro strongly in favor of the proposed new- work*, and hope the proposition may be carried by a laree vote. The Secretary of the Nnvy on Saturday afternoon sent a dispatch to the yard directing the com mandant to allow all persons residing in this ciiv and omitted to vote at the election, logo over to Vallejo and vote on the pro position without loss or pay during the time he is so occupied. A larger amount of water will be required at the yard in case extra work is ordered. The authorities hope to soon be in a posi tion to secure the extra work required by having the assuranceof having an aimndaui supply of water to work with. X Stamp Out the Bosses. X MRS. COOPER'S BIBLE CLASS. Wickedness Gather* Momentum as It Goes and la Sri f-lmpr Ding. The subject of discussion in Mrs. Coop er's Bible class yesterday was "Peter De livered From Prison." As usual, the dis cussion took a practical turn, and was opened by the tenchf»r, who said: : "Peter's experience ha« been a universal experience .in human life in many : respects. : Some times we seem to be in chains, shut in. im prisoned, with ill-starred circumstances, like armed sentinels, on guard against us. There is but one refuge— God. : Peter went forth from one .conflict oniv to meet an other.:. But be always found » teluce m God. Herod was a hard man to deal with. lie was an unprincipled tyraut and demn gogue. Up persecuted 'because it pleased the people.' Leaders should be exponents of justice and righteousness, not the supple tools of wickedness. Peter was in prison, aiid prayer was going up, without ceasing, for his release. This is the personal battle cf all history— prison experiences and won derful deliverances. Peter cast off hi* chains and walked forth. It is well to cast ofl: nil chains that bind us, whether physi cal, mental or spiritual. It is the only con dition for growth to be free and unfettered." X Stamp Out the Bosses.
