HER LAST CRUISE.
| The Caleb Curtis Wrecked
at Hong- Kong.
h'- - i
1 All on Board Drowned— A Strike of
' Union Seamen on Three Steam
i Schooners.
<
For many years the Caleb Curtis was
one of the best known pilot-boats around
this harbor. She also for years had the
reputation of being a fast sailer, and many
were the marine races which she won.
Her career now, though, is ended. A dis
patch was received in this city yesterday
from London which announced the re
ceipt of news from Hong-Kong of the total
wreck of the Curtis and the lots of her
'I master, his wife, and crew in a disastrous
I typhoon,' which swept the Oriental har
l bor on last Friday.
f . The Curtis left nere about si year ago.
i.^- her master, Peter Brock, sfad his wife
\ being bent upon a trading cruise among
the South S>a Islands. The Brock* pur
chased the Curtis in August, 1803, foi
S2OOO. She had formerly belonged to the
Pilots' Association, and for years had
been in active service. She had the
shadow of an unfortunate accident hang
h.~ Inn over her, in ugh.
In ICB6 she was capsized off the bar and
J,.* all hand* on board were lost. The vessel
floated around bottom upward, and was
finally picked up by a passing tug and
j * towed iuto port
! When the Brocks purchased her sne
was fitted up especially for the south-sea
trade. In size she was about the smallest
. vessel that ever engaged in the business.
She wat only thlrtv-eie''t ton?, and the
only thing above her deck was a galley,
which Mrs. Brock had had pot on. The
cabin was only 9 by 12 feet, and that was
divided into two parts, one sfcion being
for the captain and his wife, Pauline, and
the othtr for fie mate and crew.
■ It cost about $1000 to fit out the Curti*.
and she carried everything on board to
make the trip enjoyable. Beside? Captain
Brock and hi* wii*>, there were on board
when she sailed George 11. Ewart. first
mate, and two seamen and a messbov.
y Mate Ewart returned to this city several
weeks ago on one of the China steamers
and brought the intelligence that the ves
sel was safe at Hons-Kon?. It had been
reported some month* since that Ui« tiny
craft had been wrecked off the Marshal;
group of islands.
,Vl There was trouble on Mission-street
• * wharf yesterday, and the services of about
6ixteeu police officers were required to
keep the peace. There are three s'eam
| . • Bchooners there, the owners aud masters
i „ of which are having trouble with their
crews.
The regular crews which belong to th«
Coast Seamen's Union are out on a strike.
I ■ They have been receiving $40 a month, but
they, are dUsati-fied because thny dc» not
get a sufficient recompense for overtime..
They want 30 cents an hour, and their de
mand has been refused. In consequence
they will not work on the schooners, and
they are- doing their best to discourage
other men fr-ni taking their pUees. The
(schooners are the Point Arena, Truckee
and Farallon. Yesterday the owners of
the Point Arena tried to ship two non
union crews, but in each instance the men
listened to tne appeals of the union men,
and declined to co to work. Although
there were some hot words exchinzed
there wa- no trouble owing to the presence
of the police. An attempt will be made
. again to-day to ship non-union crews In
order that the schooners may get off on
f- their coast trios.
|i It was reported at the Merchants' Ex
m change yesterday from Nanaimo that the
bark Oregon had been lo«t. She wa
