NAMES OF BOULEVARDS, AVENUES, AND PARKS (As given by John Alexander Dowie) IN THE CITY OF ZION TOGETHER WITH BIBLICAL ASSOCIATIONS OF EACH NAME . Compiled by Miss Ellen M. Lloyd PARK NAMES SHILOH—Genesis 49:10 “The sceptre shall not depart from Judah, nor a lawgiver from between his feet, until Shiloh come; and unto Him shall the gath ering of the people be.” KEDRON—II Samuel 15:23—A brook in Palestine. “Jesus . . . went forth with His disciples over the brook Ked ron, where was a Garden, into the which He entered.” (John 18:1) BEULAH—Isaiah 62:4 — The Land of Israel's New Name. “Thou shalt be called Hephzibah, and thy land Beulah; for the Lord delighteth in thee, and thy land shall be married.” EDINA—Not a Biblical name. Edinburgh, Scotland, was the birthplace of John Alexander Dowie. In the Sixteenth Century, the Latinized form “Edina” was the name applied to that city. OPHIR—Psalm 45:9 — Ophir was celebrated for the purity and abundance of its gold. “Upon Thy right hand did stand the queen in gold of Ophir.” SHARON—Song of Solomon 2:1. “I am the rose of Sharon, and the lily df the valley.” BOULEVARDS BETHLEHEM—The Birthplace of Jesus. Matthew 2:1—“Jesus was bom in Bethlehem of Judea, in the days of Herod the king.” SALEM—John 3:23. John the Baptist baptized “near to Salem, because there was much water there.” •Salem means peace. “Melchisedec, king of Salem, priest of the Most High God . . . first being by interpretation King of righteousness, and after that also King of Salem, which is, King of peace.” (Hebrews 7:1, 2.) KEDRON—John 18:1. A brook near Jerusalem over which Jesus crossed to enter the Garden of Gethsemane. CARMEL—First Kings, Chapter Eighteen. Mount Carmel where Elijah made the challenge to Ahab. CALEDONIA—Roman name for Scotland (Dr. Dowie's native land). SHILOH—Shiloh, referring to THE MESSIAH. Genesis 49:10—“Until Shiloh come; and unto Him shall the gathering of the people be.” BETHESDA—A pool having five porches near the Temple in Jerusalem. John 5:2—“At the Pool of Bethesda Jesus beheld the impotent man who had been infirm for thirty and eight years, and Jesus healed him.” BETHEL— Genesis 35:15—“And Jacob called the name of the place where God spake with him, Bethel.” EDINA—Non-Biblical. Old Roman name for Edinburgh, Scotland—Dr. Dowie’s birth place. LAKE FRONT AVENUES HOSAH — (“Hosah Subdivision" is the legal description for Zion’s Lake Front property.) Joshua 19:29—The name of the seacoast near Tyre, “and the coast tumeth to Hosah.” NATHAN—(This name was given to Zion Beach land by Dr. Dowie.) II Samuel, Chapter Twelve—Nathan, a prophet in Israel who told David of his sins. ARNON—Numbers 21:13, 14—“In the brooks of Arnon." The brook Arnon divided the territory of the Moabites from that of the Amorites. CALNEH—Genesis 10:10 — The name of a city in the land of Shinar. ESROM—(Esrom Pool) Matthew 1:3—In Matthew’s genealogy, Esrom is given as the fifth from Abraham. Esrom, therefore, was one of the progenitors in the line of which Christ was born. PATMOS—Revelation 1:9. “I, John, . . . was in the isle that is called Patmos, for the word of God and for the testimony of Jesus Christ.” Patmos was the isle to which the Apostle John was exiled. Here, John received the “Patmos Vision” and wrote the Book of the Revelation. ESTHER—(Esther Place) Book of Esther. Queen Esther was signally used of God in the preservation of the Jewish race, after their extermination had been decreed. In celebration of this deliverance, the Feast of Purim was instituted and is still observed by the Jewish people. EUNICE—Mother of Timothy. II Timothy 1:5—“When I call to remembrance the unfeigned faith that is in thee, which dwelt first in thy grandmother Lois, and thy mother Eunice; and I am persuaded that in thee also.” EZBON— Genesis 46:16. In this verse Ezbon is listed as one of the sons of Gad, one of the sons of Jacob. ARIEL—Ezra 8:16. One of Ezra’s chief men. Isaiah 29:1, 2, 7, Isaiah applies the name to Jerusalem, say ing “Woe to Ariel, to Ariel, the city where David dwelt!” “And the multitude of all the nations that fight against Ariel. . . . shall he as a dream of a night vision.” LEMUEL—(Meaning “devoted to God.”) The counsels in Proverbs 31:1-9 are addressed to King Lemuel. “It is not for kings, 0 Lemuel, it is not for kings to drink wine; nor for princes strong drink: lest they drink, and forget the law, and pervert the judgment of any of the afflicted.” GOMER—Genesis 10:2. One of the sons of Japheth. (Japheth was a son of Noah.) MAGDALA—Matthew 15:39. Jesus “took ship, and came into the coasts of Magdala.” Mary Magdalene was a native of Magdala. DIAGONAL AVENUES LEBANON—I Kings 5:6-10. “Command that they hew me cedar trees out of Lebanon.” A mountain range forming the northern limit of the Holy Land. The Hebrew writers speak of “the noble cedars of Lebanon.” Cedar and fir trees were taken from the forests of Lebanon to build Solomon’s temple. BETHLEHEM—Matthew 2:1. * The Birthplace of Jesus. V BETHANY—John 11:1. ^ Bethany—where was located the home of -Mary, Martha, and their brother Lazarus whom Jesus raised from the dead. It was from near this village, which He loved, that our Lord ascended to Heaven. (See Luke 24:50) CALEDONIA—The Roman name for Scotland, Dr. Dowie's native land and for which he held great affection. AVENUES WITHIN THE CITY OF ZION ANTIOCH—Acts 11:26. “The disciples were called Christians first in Antioch.” Antioch was the metropolis of all Syria. It ranked at one time as the third city in the Roman Empire, only Rome and Alexandria * surpassing it. AQUILA—Acts 18:2. The Apostle Paul came to Corinth. There he found “a cer tain Jew named Aquila, born in Pontus, lately come from Italy, with his wife Priscilla.” Aquila was a tentmaker by trade, and he labored with Paul at making tents; and both Aquila and Priscilla ably assisted Paul in the work of the Lord. BEREA—Acts 17:10-11. “And the brethren immediately sent away Paul and Silas by night unto Berea” — a city in Corinth. “These (the Bereans) were more noble than those in Thessa lonica, in that they received the word with all readiness of mind, and searched the Scriptures daily, whether those things were so.” CALEB—Joshua 14:13. “And Joshua blessed him, and gave unto Caleb, the son of Jephunneh, Hebron for an inheritance.” Caleb was one of the twelve men sent out by Moses to search the land of Canaan. He, with Joshua, brought back a good report. (See Numbers, Chapters Thirteen and Fourteen.) At the age of eighty-five years, Caleb was as strong to go out to war as at forty years. DAMASCUS—Acts 9:3, 4. “And as Saul journeyed, he came near Damascus; and sud denly there shined round about him a light from heaven; and he fell to the earth and heard a voice saying unto him, Saul, Saul, why persecutest thou Me?” The Apostle Paul was converted near Damascus, and was healed of blindness in the street called Straight. He preached Christ there and was severely persecuted and his life was threatened. By night, t|he disciples let him down outside the city wall in a basket. (Acts 9:1-25.) DEBORAH—Judges 4:4. “And Deborah, a prophetess. . . . judged Lsrael at that time.” (See Judges Chapters Four and Five for the history of Deborah and Deborah's Song of Triumph.) EBENEZER—I Samuel 7:12. “Then Samuel took a stone, and set it between Mizpeh and Shen, and called the name of it Ebenezer, saying, Hitherto hath the Lord helped us.” EDEN—Genesis 2:8-17. “And the Lord God planted a garden eastward in Eden, and there He put the man whom He had formed.” ELI—I Samuel 4:15-18. “Now Eli was ninety and eight years old. . . And the messen ger answered and said, Israel is fled before the Philistines, and there hath been also a great slaughter among the people, and thy two sons also are dead, and the ark of God is taken. And when the messenger made mention of the ark of God, Eli fell from off the seat backward, and his neck brake, and he died. And he had judged Israel forty years.” Eli was a high priest, a descendant from Aaron, and a judge in Israel. His outstanding weakness was that he did not restrain his sons. Notwithstanding this one great blemish, the character of Eli was marked by eminent piety, as shown by his meek sub mission to the Divine judgment of God and his supreme regard for the Ark of God. ERI—Genesis 46:16. Eri was the son of Gad; and Gad was one of the sons of Jacob. ELIZABETH—Luke 1:5. “There was in the days of Herod, the king of Judea, a certain priest named Zacharias,” of the course of Abia; and his wife was of the daughters of Aaron, and her name was Elizabeth.” Elizabeth was the mother of John the Baptist. She was a cousin of the Virgin Mary. ELIM—Exodus 15:27; Numbers 33:9. “And they removed from Marah, and came unto Elim; and in Elim were twelve fountains of water, and threescore and ten palm trees; and they pitched there. ELIJAH—I Kings 17:1. “And Elijah the Tishbite, who was of the inhabitants of Gil ead, said unto Ahab, As the Lord God of Israel liveth, before whom I stand, there shall be neither dew nor rain these years, but ac cording to my word.” Elijah was the wonder-working prophet of God. 4 (Continued on page 8)
