NAMES OF BOULEVARDS, AVENUES, AND PARKS (Continued from Page 7) ELISHA—I Kings 19:16. “ . . . And Elisha the son of Shaphat of Abel-meholah shalt thou (Elijah) anoint to be prophet in thy room.” i Elisha was the successor of Elijah. He witnessed the miracu lous ascension into Heaven of Elijah. Elisha also wrought many wonderful miracles. EMMAUS—Luke 24:13-32. “Two of the disciples went that same day to a village called Emmaus, which was from Jerusalem about threescore furlongs.” Emmaus was the village where our Lord revealed Himself to two of His disciples on the afternoon of His resurrection. ENOCH—Genesis 5 :22, 24. “And Enoch walked with God; and he was not, for God took him.” . . Enoch was transslated; and is a type of the “Bride of Christ, His Church, which shall be translated ere the Great Tribulation comes upon a godless world. ESHCOL—Deuteronomy 1:24. “And they turned and went up into the mountain, and came unto the valley of Eshcol, and searched it out.” The two faithful spies, Joshua and Caleb, brought of “the grapes of Eshcol” to Moses, as evidence of the fruitfulness of the Land of Canaan. EZEKIEL—Ezekiel 1:3. “The word of the Lord came expressly unto Ezekiel the priest, the son of Buzi, in the land of the Chaldeans by the river Chebar; and the hand of the Lord was there upon him.” Ezekiel was a prophet-priest, who, when a captive in Babylon, by the river Chebar, was given wonderful visions; and there he wrote the Book which is called by his name. EZRA—Ezra 7:10. “Ezra had prepared his heart to seek the law of the Lord, and to do it, and to teacl* in Israel statutes and judgments.” Ezra, a celebrated priest and leader of the Jewish nation; who went at the head of a large party of returning exiles to Jerusalem, where he instituted many reforms in the conduct of the people and established public worship. GABRIEL—Luke 1:19. T am Gabriel, that stand in the presence of God.” The “An gel Gabriel” who was sent to Daniel to explain his visions; also to Zacharias to announce the future birth of John the Baptist; and to the Virgin Mary. GIDEON—Judges 7 :7. “And the Lord said unto Gideon, By the three hundred men that lapped will I save you, and deliver the Midianites into thine hand.” Gideon was the fifth Judge of Israel, and by him God delivered Israel from the Midianites. GILBOA—I Samuel 31:1, 2. * “The Philistines fought against Israel; and the men of Israel fled from before the Philistines, and fell down slain in mount Gil King Saul and Jonathan, his son, were defeated by the Philis tines and died on Mount Gilboa. GILEAD—Genesis 31:48, 49. “ . . . This heap is a witness between me and thee this day. Therefore was the name of it called Gilead; and Mizpah; for he said: The Lord watch between me and thee, when we are absent one from another.” * Gilead was the land given to Gad and the half-tribe of Man asseh. Gilead was noted for its spices. The Lord says, through Jeremiah, “Is there no balm in Gilead; is there no physician there?” And again Jeremiah says: “Go up into Gilead, and take balm, O virgin, the daughter of Egypt; in vain shalt thou use many medi- j cines, for thou shalt not be cured.” GALILEE—Matthew 4:23. “Jesus went about all Galilee, teaching in their synagogues, and preaching the Gospel of the Kingdom, and healing all manner of sickness and all manner of dise'ase among the people/’ In the time of Christ, Galilee including all the northern part of Palestine dying west of Jordan and north of Samaria. Many of the apostles were men of Galilee; and Jesus Himself was called a Galilean. “And the multitude said, This is Jesus, the prophet of Nazareth of Galilee.” (Matthew 21:11).. HEBRON—Joshua 14:13, 14. “And Joshua blessed him, and gave unto Caleb the son of Jephunneh, Hebron for an inheritance. “Hebron therefore became the inheritance of Caleb. . unto this day, because that he wholly followed the Lord God of Israel.” Hebi-on, was one of the “cities of refuge.” HERMON—Psalm 133:3. “As the dew of Hermon, and as the dew that descended upon the mountains of Zion: for there the Lord commanded the bless ing, even life for evermore.” Mount Hermon is crowned with snow throughout the year. This majestic mountain can be seen from all the heights of Palestine. At its base lay Caesarea-Philippi (Matthew 16:13) where Jesus was shortly before His transfiguration, which it is believed took place on this mountain. HOREB—Exodus 17:6. “And the Lord said unto Moses: Behold I will stand before thee there upon the rock in Horeb; and thou shalt smite the rock, and there shall come water out of it, that the people may drink.” Mount Horeb, also called Sinai. Here God gave the Ten Com i - mandments. In the vicinity of Mount Horeb, Moses beheld the burning bush and was commissioned by God to liberate Israel. Six centuries later, God revealed Himself to Elijah in this Mount, when Elijah fled from the wrath of Jezebel. JETHRO—Exodus 8:1, 11. “When Jethro, the priest of Midian, Moses’ father-in-law, heard of all that God had done for Moses and for Israel,” ... he said, “Now I know that the Lord is greater than all gods.” Jethro became a worshiper of the true God. JOANNA—Luke 8:3. “And Joanna, the wife of Chuza, Herod’s steward. . . minister ed unto Him of their substance.” Joanna, one of the faithful women who ministered to Christ while living, and brought spices to His tomb. Luke 24:1-10—“Upon the first day of the week, very early in the morning,” came “Mary Magdalene, and Joanna, and Mary the mother of James, and other women” to the sepulchre, and there they saw two angels, who said, “Why seek ye the living among the dead? He is not here, but is risen.” JOPPA—Jonah 1:3. “Jonah rose up to flee unto Tarshish from the presence of the Lord, and went down to Joppa.” Joppa was the principal seaport of Judea. In Joppa, Peter raised Dorcas from the dead; and it was in Joppa that Peter re ceived the heavenly vision which led him to understand that Sal vation was for the Gentiles as well as for the Jew’s. (Acts 10:1-22) JORDAN—Joshua 3:13, 17. “And it shall come to pass, as soon as the soles of the feet oi the priests that bear the ark of the Lord, the Lord of all the earth shall rest in the waters of Jordan, that the waters of Jordan shall be cut off from the waters that come down from above; and they shall stand upon an heap. . . . And all the Israelites passed over on dry ground, until all the people were passed clean over Jordan.” The chief river of Palestine, one that is rich with sacred asso ciations. In this river our Savior was baptized (Matthew 3:13). LYDIA—Acts 16:14. “And a certain woman named Lydia, a seller of purple, of the city of Thyatira, who worshiped God, heard us: whose heart the Lord opened, that she attended unto the things which were spoker of Paul.” Lydia was Paul’s first European convert.
