Wrlttcn \lccl\lh' ror 'I'he CUMter County Republican , In Saturdays' issue of the Lighted 11'use , there appeared a spirited editorial to the effect th t the citi7.ens of Wallter's Divide should put their hands deep iuto their pocets } and dig up enough coin to provide a Christmas' dinner for all cowboys and miners who happened to be walking on their uppers at that particular time. Some of the boys had bcen playing in pretty hard luck since winter set in. and taking it all together , the scheme looked lilte a middling good one. As the editor pathetically remarked - marked : lilt's not cvery man that carries a guu , who can. . afTord to buy turkey at an al ti- tude of 10,500 feet above sea level. " 'rhere were also hints thrown out to leading citizens and good reasons given why they spould contribute to the cause. Sam Foster , proprietor of the Gilt Dcck Bungalow , came in for a generous amount of notice ; and this was the snag that nearly wrecked the enterprise. In wind- in " article the up .his little , editor saul : " I'Sam Foster , a notorlou citizen , thug and cut-throat of this town , should contdbutc more than any enc else ; because it is a wcll k own fact that half of the boys , who are hunting for a grub-staltc and haven't enough of the 'necessary' to buy a solitary white chip , owe thcir present condition to this tin horn. We are surprised some of them haven't tendered him the sort' of receptiol ! that was given to Purgatory Pete. some months back ; but they evidentl } ' know their own busines ! and 1t is not for us to int rfere. If Mr. [ , 'oster wIll send or bring his contribution to this office , he will receive due' credit thro gh- these columns. " 'I'hen there were signs of trouble. right off. Sam swore he would drop the diminutive editor on sight , and sent a special : message warning him to keep under cover ; ' but the little fellow was not built ulon those . lines at all. He continul'd .to saunter about town , collecting sUbscription - tion ! ; for the dinuer , superintending - ing rrangements and making himself generally useful. He and Sam failed to collide , and it was soon whispered that the big gambler. and not the editor , was taking to cover. Be' that as it may , it did not prevent a good , round sum being collected for the turkeys. . . " . It was eight days b.efore Christmas ! It would 'take six days to send a freight team over to Lead ville and back. The pass was barely open , and another heavy snow would probably close it for a month ; so it behoved the manag rs of the enterprise to get a shufile on themselves. Thcy chartercd Dick Dolman's foul full bob , gave him instructiom to buy the besLlot of birds an f xin's be could for the money : and started him'off. . As the . outfit swung past thc.Gilt Ded Bungalow , Sam Foster , who wa ! standing in front of the place gave vent to an able bodied cus ! word and remarked : "I'll eat my coat if Uta baggage car ever shows up it this camp with a load of turlts.1 "The editor will make > you ea ; ; it , if it don't , " said a small voice and _ as Sam urlled quickl : are n , the devil of the "Fusel office suddenly evaporated. t Things passed quietly cnougl until the' afternoon of the sixt1 daAll - was in readines Pretty Poll's # terpsichorean tel race had been rented for th occasion. IIinckey's brass band of four pieces , including a bas rnm , was engaged. Every ( lis' ' 10 town bad bcen borrowed. tb I invitipns were ou't ( given vel bal1y ) and now , all that rc mainedto complete the festi\'itie 3 was the precious load of fowl ! I Night came on.vith no sigl1 of Dick and his charge. . ? traveller , who had arrived in light sleigh , said be had passe . Dolman at the hal -way cabir that he had a fine load on an was making good time , under n 1 circumstances. This was CI - - " - ) couraging and the crowd. felt better ; but when noon arrived the next day , and with it JIO Dich , it. began to look as though therc was a large size bolt rattl- ing' in the machine. somcwhere. 'rhe editor was the only man not excited. When approached on the subject , he said there was no use in getting one's shirt ofT. and went on setting type. Then a committee waited on him and sugges ed a search parl ) ' . He asltcd them to h ng ofT until 3 o'clock. They did so. At that time the "l1'use" made it's weekly appearance. Under 01 a scare head. the editor assured j the people of Walker's that tbe i dinner would be pulled off on , schedule time , the next afternoon - noon , and notified those cltbcns having large ovens at thcir homes , to. hold themselves in readiness to assist in ro sting the I turkeys , which woul(1 be dis- I tribued the following morning , at 6'o'clock , from in front of the- "Fuse" office. This was a surprise party , with a vengeance ; but toall questions , the editor would -give but one . "Tomorrow . " .answer : morning. 'l'here was one man to the surprise came with the suddenness of a solar plexus. He stood in his private room back of the bar. There was a nasty scowl on his ( ace and he was muttering savagely : "How in thunder is he going to do it ? 'rhe blankety blank Httle whelp is just bluffing , that's all. He an't pos3ibly do any thing. Still it's b st to been on the safe side and make ev "ty- thing secure. " He niada a step forward , then stopped as i petrified. The door 'lH d opened and he little .editor stood there. qUietly lookmg at him. His hands were thrust carelessly into his coat pocket and a sarcastic grin spread ovcr his countenance as hc noticed the effet his entrance had produced upon the other. "Though t I'd make a short CI)1 : by sending my card in advance. We've exchanged courtesies ! before , I believe. so I'll not " Here the other suddenly found his voice. , "Why , you nervy little apology for something better ! I've a great mind to-to- " Words failed him at this point as be moved bis hand. to his hip pocket. _ "Stop thall" The words were snapped out as though they had come from . a ( lerringer. "I'd l jlve been a , bigger fool than even you take me for , Sam , If I coultln't have scen any further ahead than that. I've bad the drop on ) 'OU ver since I , entered , that door , " and he slightly moved the right band concealed in his coat pocket. "Now , I'm here to transact some business and it't going , through in double quick order. The first move on the board is t for you to read that. " The ( liter took a small piece of paper , , evidentlv aLl old clipping , and laid it o the table with hi5 ! left hand. Foster leancd over and t loolted at it. " I As he rrad , his face grew livid and hi\ \ limbs shook. 'rhe t clipping was two years old and set . forth the fact of a reward being ofT red of $500 for one John Dineen. a deserter from the United. States army. Simultaneously - eously with the desertion. a nnm- b r of jewels , valued at $2.000 , an I. belonging to the colonel's wife , also disappeared , hence , the e reward. "He cognized ) 'OU by that very peculiar scar you bave over the eye , " calmly continued the editor. "You have tried hard to conceal it. and 1 give vou credit for , being considerabl smarter than ! ) 'OU look. I've had my little twinkling optic on you for some ti me. . ' 'Now , to business !
