that in bis message to congress,
early in 1858, President Buohanan
recommended the formation of a
separate territory out of the Gadfi-
ueu purchase, and that late in the
same month Senator Gwin of Cal
ifornia, introduced a bill to org;:,

The legislature of NewMexico,
in February, 1858, passed a resolu
tion favoriog the measure, though
recoinrnendiDg a north and south

dian, and also the removal of all
the New Mexico Indians to north
