f Farm Topics SEED CORN. The assurance of a good yield ct corn lies primarily in the seed. Ex perience has shown that the cause of barren stalks, those bearing either no ears, or small ears, ta due to poor . ,eea and such seed as Is not properly Mred for after it is gathered from the Held. The barren stalks detract much from the yield. One such in every dozen hills reduces the yield from fit. teen to twenty bushels per acre. This shows how important it Is that the jeed corn ba carefully cured. It has been Bhown that corn when Brit gathered from the field, even when It seems well matured and dry, still has over thirty percent, of water In the grain. Containing so much moisture it is readily seen that there Is danger of damage and weakening of the germ by freezing. This at once mggests the importance of drying It by some kind of process, and at least of keeping It in the free air currents, not too much exposed to the possi bility of freezing, until this moisture ii greatly reduced. Those who grow seed corn on a large scale kiln-dry it by gentle steady warmth. Of course, seed corn so prepared, if it has been grown from selected well bred corn, is sure to germinate under fairly favorable conditions of soil and weather, and insures a much larger yield than the corn treated in the or dinary way. This is the time to con sider this Important matter. Good sound and well dried seed corn, If it has been grown from well bred se lected seed, Insures a yield that pays well for the care in saving and pre paring It. Indiana Farmer. FOR THE BARN FLOOR. I am sending a plan for a barn im i plement that will help a farmer. It is a stable or barn Bcraper that can be used on dirt or board floor. An old handle from a shovel, fork or rake will do; ours Is four feet six inches long. For the blade an old gopher bhide, eighteen inches long on tlia sharp edge, then two braces twelve inches long with inch and a halt or two inches bent down slant tag. Put a small piece on to bolt the handle to and it is complete. Mrs. ' W. G. Louks, Fowler, Ind., in Epito-mist. CREAM RIPENING. Prof. Balner, of the dairy depart ment of the Colorado Agricultural College, says experience has repeated ly shown that hand separator cream produces better butter than that sep arated by any other process. The cream should be kept In as nearly sweet condition as possible until nonnh has been gathered for a churning. This should then ba soured or ripened. To keep the cream sweet, while gathering enough for a churning, keep the can con taining it surrounded with cold wat r. To ripen, place where it will be come somewhat warmer (at a tem perature of seventy-five or eighty de crees), until it is sour enough. Then cool down to a' temperature of from fifty-five to sixty degrees, which is rlKbt for churning. Let it stand at this temperature for an hour or so before churning, if possible. This H1 cause the butter to come in bet ter condition. Cream that Is being ripened should e thoroughly stirred several times before it is ready for churning. It Is often advisable to save some t the buttermilk of one churning to be used as a starter (the same as Wast in bread making), for the next batch of cream. Add a small amount of this old buttermilk to the sweet cream whioh has gathered for the new churning, thoroughly stir it, and t will ripen very much more rapid ly. Cnre should be exercised to keep this old buttermilk in as good con dition bb possible. This method of cream ripening will be found excel 'tt for the winter months. Prom Our New Dictionary. "Tudor the terms of the Louisiana statute before any person can hold a public office of any description It Is necessary for such person to be an elector, and as women can't vote In our State the prohibition Is almost absolute. Because of the peculiar fit ness and ability of Miss Jean Gordon It was desired that she be made fac tory inspector, and so her friends were Instrumental In having an amendment to the law passed that authorized the employment of women In certain specified cases. "Since then a Miss McCall wa elected to be superintendent oi schools of one of our parishes, but It Is not considered at all probable that she will be deemed eligible to act, as her case Is entirely different from that of Mlsj Gordon.
