Mr. Thomas Stanton d it d at the home
of bis son, Joseph Stanton, in this city
on Tuesday night after a long illneee
Deceased was 87 years of age and bad
been a citizen of the county for many
years. A widow survives bim Tbs
funeral was held yesterday afternoon at
Piney Grove church. Our sympathy Is
extended to the bereaved family.
The body of Mrs. Tucker Bass was
brought to Madison from Brnnford last
Wednesday night and on Thursday
morning was interred In tbe cemetery
at Pioeland eburch. The death of Mrs.
Bass took place at Branfordon Tuesday
afternoon and was tbe result of a borrt
ble acofdeot. Monday morning Mr. Bass
and bis family moved from near Madi
son to Braciford where be bad obtained
employment In a saw mill. Monday
night about two o'clock Mrs. Bass left
ber bed to Obtain more covering. She
lit a lamp which almost immediately
exploded, saturating ber clothing with
kerosene which caught fire and she was
soon enveloped to Hemes. Mr. Buss
arouaed by tbe screams of his aofortu-
nate wife, went to hr assistance and
finally succeeded in putting out the
Hames but not until bis wife was terri
bly burned, froni tb effect of which
be died as stated. Deceased leaves a
husband, one child and a host of rela
tives to mourn their loss. Mr. Bass
suffered Dainful burns in bis efforts to
release bis wits from tbe flames. Tb
sympathy of tbe entire community goes
out to the unfortunate husband and tbe
little cfaild fa tbeir deep affl'otion.

rapidly driven to Valdosra where tbev

and tbe services of a minister to tie the
knot. But there tbey ran against an
obstruction in tbe form of a telephone
message from Prof. Cats, principal of
tbe school, wbo forbade tbe ieauance of
tbe license. Nothing daunted, Mr.
Beoton gave orders to "drive on" to the
next county seat and drive on they did
until they reaohed Statenville, a quiet,
out ot-tbe-wsy little county town cot
known to the geograpby of tbe obstruc
tionists to the marriage, and here tbe
license was secured, a minister was call
ed la end tbe determined young people
were speedily pronounced "man and
wife." Mr. and Mrs. Bcton returned
to Madison about ten o'clock Friday
night. Our congratulations and beet
wishes are extended.
