... Whs lEtttairw- VOL IX-N O. 4t MADISON, FLA., THURSDAY. JUJNE 30, 19.10. $1 A YL'AR Prohibition la Alabama. To the EditorsThere is so trued wrong information afloat in Florida regarding prohibition in Alabama so people even have got the no tion that Alabama has "gone wet" giin that I crave space in your valuable paper to set forth tbe real raets. These are as 'ollows: Alabama baa NOT ' gone wet" again! Every taw against tbe sale of liquor in Alabama enacted by the last legislature remains in full force and effect to-day just as when it ai written. There is no saloon in Alabama to-day from Athens to Mobile No vote on tbe return of saloons has ever been taken in Alabama so iba't Alabama baa never said she wants saloons ajain. Anybody (except, perhaps, the rankest liquor partisan) who knows Alabama conditions will state tbat tbe vote oz tbe Amendment Inst fall involved so much aside from the mere question of "Saloons or no Saloons' tbat it was not an expres- tion on tbe merits of the case. To bold tbat tbe Spring primary just held over there, indicates a 'wet' victory is tbe rankest non sense. Mr. Emmett O'Neal, who opposed tbe prohibition amendment was nominated for Governor by a mnjonty of 12,000. Bat Mr. O'Neal always and everywhere during the campaign, stated on every platform that he would oppose all efforts to repeal the prohibition laws now in force Mark that down an I reaiem. er it. His oppi.nen;, Mr. Mullory, (made no stronger promise. Anjther fact; iu the race for lieutenant-Governor, Mr, Welter . Seed was nominated by 11,000 ajority almost as much as tbat of 'Neal for Governor. And Seed flavored the Amendment last full. The pro liquor crowd fait to tell Hhat. But it is a fact. If O'Neal's election means tbat Alabama waniB saloons again, what does Seed's election mean? Still another fact; Tbe Birming ham Ledger says that the State, widers have elected a majority of the Legislature. And the Legisla ture is the only body that can repeal lie prohibition laws. Wbere does tbtttucb vaunted "liquor victory" show up in these facts? And they we facts, too. The. following edi torial from the DeSoto County News is in point. Note that Edi tor W. B. Hare is an Alabamlan. I quote the editorial i "MISLEADING ALABAMA HEWS. "We do not condemn any pijper from publishing its views of news. That is its privilege. Still it is amusing to read tbe 'Alabama let. ters(?) cublUhed in about half ioien Florida papers. These let iters in lancuase are the same. "Tbat tbey are sent out in the in. terest of the liquor traffic is not known to the masses; but we know they are, "We do think our worthy Florida exchanges should be a little careful about such stuff. We do not know everything about tbe political situs, tioa in old Alabama. However we happen to know something. "These famous 'letters' in describ ing tbe 'failure of the statewide prohibition' make many misleading lttmenU. ' In a recent 'letter' it was stated in substance, tbat tbe Birmingham News tbe greatest evening paper !o Alabama had seen tbe error of It way. It supported the state-wide Program, including tbe constitution. 1 intendment. The paper was now AGAINST tbe whole thing, and was for LOCAL OPTION (). What is lacking to make that the truth? The paper has changed hands. Gen eral Rhodes, the former owner and controller of Tbe News, is dead. Tbe majority of tbe stock of the pa per is now the property of Frank G ass (and associates) tbe 'wet' edi. tor of the Montgomery Advertiser. Of course it has changed its policy! Every well-informed Southern Editor knows tbat Frank Glass has cover by word or vote helped to Be. cure or enforce prohibition in coun ty or etate. It was also heralded as news (?) in those 'letters' tnat NOT A MAN, who supported the prohibition amendment would be elected. Let's see. True, O'Neal was elect, ed governor, but tbat was not tbe WHOLE truth. Walter D. Seed, a life.long pro hibitionist, won for Lieutenant Gov. ernor by 11,000. Many other men who supported tbe amendment have been elected to tbe legislature. In fact, the Birmingham Ledger states that the state-widers have a msjj-i. Four of the Alabama congressmen Taylor, Burnett, Hobson and Heflin supported the prohibition amendment. AH of the four have been returned, some without opposi tion. And Herlin, upon whom a great fight was made, has swept the field, carrying every county save one, by overwhelming majorities. Like Frank Chirk in Florida, Tom Herlin spoke against the liquor tnifllc and like liiiu he hug b;en returned to congress. Yet these wonderful letter-writers from Montgomery had every one 'repudiated' and defeaied. We are not a prophet or a reform er. We do wa-t our Florida breih ren to be fair especially in giving the news." Tbe liquor folks are welcome to all the comfort they can get from Alabama. Their comfort will be short-lived. They place a tremend ous discount on the intelligence of Florida citiasenry if tbey think our people are to be so easily misled by arrant falsehoods and gross mis representations of facts. CUAS. L.
