Today the. pages of memory
are turned back and loving
hearts call to mind that mag
nificent army that rode forth to
war under the leadership of Lee
and Jackson and Johnston, and
other matchless commanders.
Let our thoughts dwell upon the
subject for a moment- The birth
of a new ration, the Southern
Confederacy, the fight at Sum

ful struggle for existence, Chick

day at Gettysburg, Sherman's
march through the heart of the
weakened Confederacy, the cap

at Appomattox, the death of the
new nation and the imprison

construction. Surely those were
the days that tried men's souls,
when, after four years of
war, the South lay prostrate,
with her wealth swept away, and
thousands of her bravest sons
sleeping beneath their native

that today in loving memory we
should place a flower above their

By mourning beauty crowned."
