The Evening Telegram Published every afternoon from the Kentucky Building, Lakeland, Fla, Entered in the postoffice at Lake lend, Florida, as mail matter of the second class. II. P. HBTHERINGTON, EDITOR. A. J. HOLWORTHY business and Circulation Manager. SUBSCRIPTION RATES: One year 5.00 Six months 2.50 Three mouths 1.2S Delivered anywhere within the limits of the City of Lakeland for 10 cents a week. RELATIVE TO THE TUCKER. HUFFAKEB CONTROVERSY. From the same office is Issued THE LAKELAND NEWS a weekly newspaper giving a re sume of local matters, crop condi tions, county affairs, etc. Sent anywhere for $1.00 per year. On the second page of this issue will be found an outline of the polices favored by J. ('. Brown .andidato for representative, a read ing of which we commend to our leaders. The ideas enumerated therein seem to us such as any lover of good government might favor. o Dear candidates, it Is early yet, and the temperature is not high. If you allow yourselves to get overhet now, what will you do during the leng warm spring days immediately preceding the primary? Keep cool; knjp sweet. The voters will appre ciate it and you'll come nearer win ning out in the end. E. 1). Lambright, associate editor o- the. Tampa Tribune, and the best editorial writer in the South (ex aequo with Uncle Joe Dixon) wants to go to Baltimore as a delegate to the National Democratic Convention Men like Lambright do yeoman and unselfish service to their country and their state every day of their lives and they are desrving well at the hands of the people. Lambright's ambition is very modest, indeed, the place be asks carrying with it no emoluments. The voters may send him as a representative Florldian, in the full faith that he will do the right thing and carry out their in structions as indicated in the prl mary. . o We must respectfully, but firmly, again call attention to the fact that matter in the interest of any candl date must be treated as advertising, pure and simple. Were we to at tempt to give space to a tenth of the political communications which are offered us, we would have 'room for nothing else, whatever, and the paper would be deprived of those features which make it popular. We trust that candidates and their fi lends will be reasonable, and not expect to monopolize our columns with matter intended to advance their personal interests, and there fore just as much entitled to be paid for as is the display advertisement f the dry goods merchant or grocer who advertises his wares. o THE RELATION OF THE NEWSPAPER TO CANDIDATES Mr. R. E. Lufsey prepared an an swer to Mr. Huffaker's letter of yes terday, but it was received at this office this afternoon too late for pub lication today. It will appear in Monday's Issue. Editor Telegram: It is necessary for me to defend myself against the attack of Mr. R. D, Huffaker in the Telegram of Mar. 1st. It seems that he wants to rob me of the credit that has heretofore been given me for having given my services free of charge to the cause of public Schools. I was City Attorney for Lakeland then as now, but the city has alwaya paid me and other attorneys an ad ditional fee for litigated cases in ths Courts, in addition to my salary, which is very small, and this Is the rule of other cities. When he has practiced law long enough to have some experience in legal mat ters he will know this. Mr. Huffaker may have been serving tne scnoois himself but If he has he has been paid for it, every month he has ever taught. Facts of the Case. Mr.N. A. Riggins was the origina tor of this movement to test the leg ality of the Bond Issue of Lakeland, n order that as he stated "If the Bonds were unconstitutional, we might call upon our Legislature at itr. session of IS 11 to submit a Con stitutional Amendment legalizing School Bonds for Special Tax School Districts," and in a conversation with him last evening, he was clear in his statement that this very case o Brown vs. Lakeland was what brought about the amendment to the constitution which Is to be voted up on at the next general election, and which I hope will be adopted. I re fer you to Mr. Biggins and Mr. Brown. Mr, Lufsey, who wrote the article which Mr. Huffaker replied to used the word Municipal Bonds errone ously instead of Special Tax School Bonds, but the effect is all the name It is strange that Mr. Huffaker, after filling the papers of Polk coun ty with complimentary matter about himself, would be so jealous of the very first article Intended to be com plimentary to me, and even rush in to print to try to discredit it. He has Intentionally tried to mis lead the public in stating that Judge Tucker did the work of the lawsuit t refer you to his letter in this is sue. EPPES TUCKER. JR. NOTED LECTURER WILL AD. WILLIAM R. rKTERJ Dated February In, i ;!;'. Editor Lakeland Telegram: I notice a piece from Mr. Huffaker, attacking Mr. Eppes Tucker, Jr., about the suit he represented the city in. Mr. Tucker did not charge any fee, and I think he rendered a valuable service to the cause of the public schools and the betterment of the state at large. I deem it a credit to Mr. Tucker, of which Mr. Huffaker ran not rob him by such mud-sling ing. The newspapers were full of comments on this case and it cer inly was the cause of bringing about the Constitutional amendment for school bonds. R. L. IJROWX. The New York World offers this lesson to editors during a campaign year which we think is excellent ind especially suited to this latitude where we are all of one political faith and the editor is not called on to prove his party loyalty by espous ing the cause ot any particular can (Mdate: "The World has alwaya found it better to have no personal relations xcept in a news gathering way with candidates whom it is supporting for office. It prefers to have no edito rial acquaintance with them, how ever charming they may be. It nev r cares whether they are satisfied or dissatisfied with the policy of the raper toward them. They are at lib erty to praise It or repudiate It, as ihey please, and we go our way un- exed. The World has always been tdited for the benefit of the public, t ot for the benefit of a candidate. ?nd we find it works excellently well. Furthermore, it has been our expe rience that candidates whom we t-upported often embarrassed as Much more than we could possibly 'mbarrass them. This Is our little 'esson to editors. They are free to take It for what It is worth Lakeland. March 1, 1912. Editor Telegram: The communica tion of Mr. R. B. Huffaker in the Evening Telegram today contains an error which-1 will correct, as it re fers to mc, personally. Speaking of the suit of Brown vs. Lakeland, Mr. Huffaker says: "I am reliably informed that what work was done on the other side of the suit was done by Mr. Eppes Tucker, Sr." This information is not true, Mr. Eppes Tucker, Jr., prepared his answer and argued the case before the Circuit Court. I rendered him no assistance whatever. He won the case In the Circuit Court and Colonel Olliphant appealed it to the Supreme Court I read Mr. Tucker's brief on the aypeal and that was the extent of what I did in the case. Respectfully. E.
