Matter That Is Worthy of the Most
Careful Attention That Can Be
Given It
Much of the irritability of the human
race is caused by overindulgence in
unbalanced meals composed of badly
cooked foods.
The modern, thrifty housewife plans'
her meals so as to secure the best diet
for her family. During the hot months
heat-producing foods fats, sugar,
starches, heavy puddings and pies
and fried things should not bo eaten,
but rather those which are easily di
gested and cooling to the blood.
The business in which the bread
winner of the family is engaged must
be considered when planning the
meals. The man or woman leading
a sedentary life requires foods easp
of digestion and assimilation. This
class of people does not require as
much food as that engaged in muscu
lar labor. The latter class needs heav
ier meals, but these should be less bur
densome than in winter.
For both classes too much cannot
bo said about masticating one's food.
The teeth were made for this numosa
and many ills would disappear if food
was not bolted into the stomach, which
is too often overtaxed.
Salads rich with mayonnaise or
boiled dressing should never appear
at dinner, but be served for luncheon,
or supper. Green or fresh vegetable
salads with a simple oil and vinegar
dressing are the proper thing for din
ner at all seasons. Potatoes can ba
eliminated from the menu Borne days
and In their place substitute macaroni,
rice, hominy, beans, peas and other

BABY'S NEEDS IN SUMMER
Lightness of Clothing l One of the
First Requisites During the Hot
Weather.
Warm weather is a dangerous pe
riod for children, and all mothers
dread the summer for their little ones.
As the weather grows warmer and
warmer, fewer and lighter clothes
should be worn by the baby. So
many mothers have a mistaken idea
that flannel bands must be kept
around baby's abdomen, next to the
skin, no matter what the weather.
The treatment is not only wrong, but
actually cruel.
To keep flannel next to the young
Sensitive skin whea the weather is so
hot that every turn of the little body
against the flannel causes severe ir
ritation is almost barbarous. Yet how
many mothers believe in it! There
are fewer each year, for which we
should be grateful, but still there are
left a large enough number of . such
deluded mothers to keep a great many
babies in comparative torture during
the summer time.
The little body should feel nothing
but the sheerest, softest materials
next to it. When it Is very hot the
young baby may be totally undressed,
except for his little shirt. During the
hottest hours of the day the little one
should be placed on a wide bed
dressed in this garb, or rather lack
of garb, and allowed to play or sleep
tintil the sun is setting.

the mass meeting, June 30, is now
organized and ready to hear or have
submitted to it, any and all com
plaints of whatever character, per
taining to existing conditions of the
city in all departments, official con
duct and management of officials,
condition of streets, light and wa
ter service, sanitation, and sanitary
condition, etc. Every citizens is re
quested, and it is the duty of every
citizen of Lakeland to report in writ
ing and in person such things and
conditions as should not exist in the
city. It is your home, your city,
your interest and welfare, and your
DUTY to help the committee make
public these conditions. Report to

Parasol days are surely here. In
fact a few promenaders have even
carried them for the past few weeks,
possibly because they gave the re
quired color notes to the toilettes,
possibly because of the modish narrow-brimmed
or brlmless hat, which
leaves the eyes exposed to the glare
ob a sunny day.
Many of the new parasols are cer
tainly lovely. Those most practical
are or course the plain one-tone ef.
fects, in dark or medium colorings,
and of these there is ample supply la
all the fashionable colorings.
Taffeta is much in evidence among
parasols, as It Is everywhere, change
able taffetas, plain cr shirred, being
used for the cover, pinked frills, ruches
or cordlngs and puffings forming the
trimming. One taffeta parasol was
trimmed with three larger puffs. An
other was entirely covered in nar
row ruffles. In line with some of the
quaint taffeta sunshades are the frilled
effects In airiest materials.
A parasol may have a foundation of
the filmiest of white or cream shadow
ace with covering of filmy black
lace, which reaches almost to the
edge of the parasol, leaving the shaped
points of the white lace to form a bor
der. The lace covering is so trans
