Still there Is considerable grown in the South Sec tion, under shades; this being a dif ferent kind of pineapple from that grown on the Eeast Coast. PECANS This is a nut that does fine on the well-drained land that has a good clay subsoil, in Florida, but is grown largely in West, North and Central sections and mostly in the two first. There are some very large groves in the North Section ,one gTove con taining over 4,000 acres. Yields in the last .three years: 1916, 8,272,260 pounds; 1917 10,100,000 pounds; 1918, 11,372,150 pounds. POULTRY If yo,u were able to see some of the poultry shows that are held in this State at one glance, you would be able to know that all breeds of birds do well and thrive in Florida. Turkeys, ducks, geese and most breeds of chickens can be found in the State. The large tourist trade in the win ter gives a good market for a great many more chickens and eggs than our State is now producing. The poultry clubs of the State are doing a great deal to bring in better birds and increase the output The egg pro duction of the State for 1916 was 11,' 014.270 dozen eggs; 1917, 13,335,4442 dozen; 1918, 16,500,000 dozen. BEE CULTURE Florida, the land of Flowers, natur allv is the ideal home for the busy honey bee. The scrub or saw palmet to, the tit and sour wood, with the ritriis. eroves and the' many other shrubs and annual flowering plants, furnish no limit of work for the bees While this is one of Florida's neg lected .industries, it now produces near to a million pounds of honey anuually. Experts from the Depart ment of Agriculture, Washington, D, C, say that Florida has the greatest possibilties In this line of any State In the Union. They are now helping The next time you buy calomel ask for to get the work started by more peo ple. The velvet bean is worth millions of dollars to the farmer; it is certain ly proving worthy of its name as it is helping to put more farmers on "velvet" than almost any other crop in the State. CITRUS FRUITS The average person, when the State of Florida is mentioned, immediately thinks of its fine climate, golden or anges and fresh vegetables Citrus fruits Include the following: Oranges, grapefruit, tangerines, limes. kumquats. and lemons. The last two are not produced in any large quan titles, and most of the limes are pro duced along the East Coast on' the keys. The oranges and the grape fruit make the bulk of the shipments A good many years ago the aver age person did not know what grapefruit was. and most of the old growers said when these and oranges began to be planted by thousands that the market would soon not be able to take care of the amount produced. However, it seems that the people are being educated to the use of the most delicious breakfast fruit faster than its production- One of the beauties of the citrus fruit tree is that of its producing more fruit each year, that is when i has been planted on soil adapted to its culture and the tree has been glv en proper care and attention. There are orange trees in the State known to be over seventy-five years old and Ihey produce more fruit each year. In Rome there is an orange tree re portd to be over 1-500 years old and in Spain one over 600 years old The citrus-fruit industry of Florida has been on a commercial basis so ltmg that the producers have been able to well organize the gathering' packing and shipping of thi3 fruit and thl marketing end seems to be well taken care of. too The grower Is beginning to realize that the consumer will pay a better price for a good article properly de livered to him. In other sections the truck farmers use some method of overhead Irriga tion." Therefore, even if the normal rainfall does not come, the crops will continue to grow-by having moisture applied. Still there are other special reasons why v the vegetable kusiness has grown so large in this State, es peclally certain crops in certain dls trlcta. In a good many of these dls tricts there is special protection from frost by being near the ocean, gulf, a large lake or river. Vegetables grow so fast and are so tender in Florida that a slight frost will sometimes do more or lees damage, but In these specially protected districts the wa- ter protection will often prevent any damage from a slight cold. The same holds true in regard to citrus fruits. Florida has another special advan tage In the marketing of Its vegeta bles and fruit crop; that is its desir able location concerning the center of population of the United States, which is shown with the map recently pub lished. If you had not given the matter se rious thought It would be hard in deed to believe some of the cash re turns per acre from Florida track crops. It would be astonishing ts know the millions of dollars that these crops bring Into the State an nually.
