Pespite the inclement weather last Friday evening there was a larRe gathering at the opera house to wit ness the commencHiiiimt exercises of the Putnam High school which oc curred at H o'clock. " The exercises opened with an in vocation by Kev. F. H. Kichey, fol lowed by a selection from the Palat ka Orchestra. . Occupying seats on the stage were Itev. Dr. Win. F. Blaekman, Hon. S.J. MilUirn, Hon. L. K. Tucker, Misses Alida Gardner, Carrie Greene, Georgia Johnson and Myrtle Holden. and Prof, I. I. Himes, master of eer- Ktmonies. There was only one graduate, Miss Myrtle Holden, and her essay "Col lege Life for Girls" was a thoughtful, well delivered and instructive paper. At the conclusion, Miss Holden received many beautiful bouquets as expressions of highest regard from admiring friends. Miss Ida Leib was on the program for a vocal sulo and her number call ed forth a round applause to which she responded gracefully. Mrs. L. A. Smith's solo also elicited a storm of applause and she nppeaivd a sec ond time. Mrs. Henry S. Wilson, piano, and Master Warner Hanim, violin, were accompanists. The presentation of diploma was made by Hon. S. J. Hilburn, chair man of the school board, in a few well chosen words. After the presentation of the class pin, Prof. I. I. Himes introduced the principal speaker of the evening, Rev. Dr. W. F. ISlackmfin, president of Rollins College, Winter Park. Dr. Blackmail made an able and pleasing address and kept the audi ence in good humor from start to finish. He congratulated Palatka upon having such a creditable insti tution of learning as the Putnam High School, and said that he would unhesitatingly recommend the school for efficient and capable work, nut from what he had heard of it, but, from what he actually knew. Another selection by the orches tra closed the nrotrrain or tne eveninir and another successful term of our school was at an end. The decorations on the stage were beautiful, consisting of palms, bam boo, white oleanders and sunflowers, and were arranged under the super vision of Mrs. V. A. Walton, ably assisted by former graduates and pupils of the high school. Tho orchestra was coniposeu m Misses Cora and Fay Moouey, Inez Holden, Masters Del Canova, War ner Ha'mm and Arthur Rolands. The great Russian fleet of battle ships, cruisers, destroyers and tor pedo boats under command of Vice Admiral Rojestvensky encountered the Japanese Beet under Admiral Togo in the Corean straits last Saturday. The lighting continued all that day and night and through Sunday, with result that 22 of the Russian ships were either sunk or captured and the Japanese ships escaped without ser ious injury. The Russians lost over a thousand men by drowning, and over H,000 were captured, including Admir als Rojestvensky and Nebogatotf to gether with 80 Russian stall officers. The official reports of Admiral To iro show his victory means the fol lowing losses to the Russians: "Following six battleships sunk: Prince Suvnrolf, Imperator Alexan der III, Borodino, Osliabia, Sissoi Veliky and Navarine. "Following five cruisers sunk : Ad miral Kakimoff, Dmitri, Doiiski, Vladimir, Alonomach, Svietlana and Jemtchug. "Coast defense ship Admiral Ou shakolf sunk. Two special ships Kamtchatka and three destroyers, also sunk. "Two battleships Oreland and Im perator Nichola II., two coast de fense ships General Admiral Aprax ineand Admiral Seniavin and one destroyer Hiedovy captured. Knapp a sewing machine agi nt of Tampa shot and seriously wounded Police Captain Sam J. Carter Monday night.
