The citv council on Tuesday night passed the automobile speed limit ordi nance. 1 he ordinance limits the speea of automobiles in the city to 15 miles an hour. Mr. and Mrs. H. B Anderson of Saga- naw, Mich., who are on their weaaing trip to Cuba, stopped over a few days this week with Mr. and Mrs. H. 1. Leeks. Miss Grace Rowley of San Mateo, who is teaching piano lessons in this city, has brought her piano here and placed it in the rooms of the Woman's Club, giving the club the use of the instrument. The unveiling of the clock in M. S. Brown's clothing store will hereafter be at 7 p. m. each Wednesday instead of 3 p. m. , in order to give workman a better chance to attend. Dan Molincux, the Bostwick negro who murdered a woman at that place last Thursday and took to the woods, was captured by Sheriff Kennerly within two hours of the murder, and is now in jail. A diamond brooch, on exhibition at the window of SmitK's jewelry store is going to be given to the lady selling the most tickets to the Pythian Sisters entertainment at Howell Theater Mon day night the 17th inst. F. J. Cunningham, the contractor, has determined that Palatka is good enough for him, and has decided to make this citv his home and business headquarters. He is going to join in the movement to "Push Paialka" with his w hole soul, The official proceedings of the board of county commissioners will be pub lished in this paper next week, and each month during the ensuing year, the commissioners having made ar rangements to that effect at their meet ing yesterday. The next meeting of the Woman's Club will be held on Friday afternoon, Ian. 14th, at 3 o clock, sharp. Rev. Wra. Wyllie at this meeting will give a lecture on Scotland and Miss Rox bor ough will sing some Scotch songs. Mr. and Mrs. D. J. Elliott of Salisbury, Mil., with their three children, Miss Laura, James and Alice, are expected to arrive in the city this afternoon. While here they will visit Mr. and Mrs. M. M. Vickers and other relatives. Last Sunday at the home of T. M Appleby on Kirby street, Mr. Frank Ap pleby and mrs. tine t. lordon were united in marriage by Rev. H. Dutill of St. James church. Mrs. Appleby is sister of Mr. Pructt of Palatka Heights. P. J. Becks is still doing business at the old stand. This week he has sold to Avery Owen the residence at the corner ot Kirby and Dodge streets, for merly owned by John A. Crosby of San Mateo. Becks has other deals up his sleeve. Claude G. Higgins of Nicholasville, Ky., is the guest of Mr. and Mrs. Hart Gibson of East Palatka. It is under stuod that Mr. Higgins has been so im pressed with the country that he has decided to eventually make East Pa latka his home, and to that end has pur chased tbe 1 higpin place. The Methodist people are to have a benefit performance for their new par sonage enterprise at Kells Wonderland moving picture theater next Friday night, Jan. 14th. The music will be furnished by Mrs. Tilghman's orchestra and an extra fine line ot pictures will be shown at the regular prices. James Adams' big 10 cent show will exhibit in Palatka all of next week The Adams show is in a big tent capa ble of seating 1500 people. This will be on the Griffin lot. The show con sists of song and dance artists and other specialties and has a good reputation giving a first class show for little money The petition presented by the saloon men to the county commissioners ask ing for a wet or dry election contained 787 names in all. One ward in this city furnished MORE than one-sixth of the entire number, and enough negroes signed in this ward alone to constitute one-sixth of the signatures on tbe EN TIRE PETITION. CRUSHED UNDER TOUS OF EARTH W. I. Scott Received Injuries From Which He Died Wed- nesday Night. V. I. Scott, president of the Utlca Brick & Tile company whose yards and kilns are at Rice Creek a few miles out from Palatka, was crushed by a cave-in of earth at that point on Wednesday morn ing, receiving injuries from which he died that night at his home in this city. It has been the habit at the brick yard to dig out clay from the bank leaving the earth above to overhang. - Mr. Scott went under shuch an overhanging bank to do some work, and while there the earth fell on him. He was rescued by the men and driven to Palatka where he had the attention of Drs. Welch and Johnson. Dr. Welch says that three ribs were broken, but that death was due to internal injuries in the region ot the heart also the kidnevs. The physicians visited him several times during the daj and did everything they could for the injured man, who suffered but liitle. About at nignt Mr. neon exper ienced difficulty in breathing and Dr. Welch was sent for. The patient asked the doctor to turn him over on his aide. This was done, and no sooner was it accomplished than Mr. Scott hreathed his lasL Short funeral services were held at the residence of Mrs. H. A. Gray at noon Thursday, conducted by Rev. W. C. Knster. I ndertalter lierber prepared the body for shipment to Mr. Scott's old home, Utica, N. Y., whither it went yes terday afternoon. Mr. Scott has been interested in bus iness in this county some 12 or 14 years. He was president of the Utlca uric . Tile Co., a corporation organized at Utica, N. Y., from which city it takes its name. Mr. scott was an active man oi affairs and was highly esteemed here as a straight-forward business man and hon orable, upright citizen whose death is a loss to the community. Then the crowd looked at their tickets. R. . Neck's ticket proved to be the winner at 3-20-6, and he was given the f i prize in crisp (1 bills. T. H. Jarman s turpentine camp near Bostwick was the scene of an attempted murder last Sunday when Owen Fennell a negro, shot Belle Johnson, a negro woman with a shot gun. 1 he woma was wounded in the leg and side, but her injuries are not serious. Mr. Jar- man, who is a deputy sheriff, arrested Fennell, brought him to Palatka and he is in jail. Justice Marshall bound him over to tbe circuit court CoL A. J. Hrfbourn. Col. Alpheus Jerome Hilbourn died at his home on North Third street last Saturday afternoon, aged 81 years. CoL Hilburn came to Palatka some eight years ago from Boston, Mass., where he was long associated in the bus iness of the Raymond syndicate. Since coming to Palatka he has lived in re tirement, being seen frequently upon the streets up to within a few months ago. His illness was of short duration. He was op and about tbe house the day before his death. Col. Hilbourn was a veteran of the civil war; and was a retired member of the Ancient and Honorable Artillery of Massachusetts, of which he rose to the rank of colonel. He was a most geniel, kindly gentleman of the old school and was held in the highest esteem by the people of ralatka. t uneral services were new at tne nome Sunday afternoon conducted by Rev. John Lemley of the Presbyterian church. The body was sent to Boston for inter ment. Col. Hilbourn was a Mason of high rank and the order in Palatka was large ly represented at the funeral. The pall bearers were Judge E. E. Haskell, Hon. I. nilburnr senator t. a. Cnll, oeo. E. Gay, W. G. Tilghman and J. H, Haughton. Will Supply New Seeds.
